A Michigan-based power company is hoping to build and operate a $600-million, 600 megawatt, natural gas-fired energy plant in Palermo -- east of Bronte Road near the Halton dump and south of Rattlesnake Golf Club. The proposal from CMS Generation Co. based in Jackson, Michigan is called the Palermo Clean Energy Centre. It could power 600,000 homes in the west GTA and is hoped to be operating by June 2010. The proposed Palermo plant would sit on 20 acres of a 140-acre site. It's one proposal that's come forward as the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) entertains submissions for new power plants to fill the west GTA's electricity needs -- and it is heading to the public consultation stage in the environmental approval process. "I sure have more questions than answers at this point," said Ward 4 Town/Regional Councillor Allan Elgar, who noted he believes the project is on land that's in the Greenbelt. Though it may end up being a permitted use in the Greenbelt, Elgar said he still wants answers on other issues, too, like what will be going up the plant's stack and what will be in the water discharged after power generation. "I still have a lot of homework to do," said Elgar.
