The series will feature an evening of food and great jazz in the historic Hearth Room at the Halton Region Museum. Mood Indigo performs a mix of light jazz and pop sung by Monika Burany accompanied by Brent Setterington on keyboard and Peter Smith on sax. The Hearthside Dinner & Music series is one of the fundraising initiatives that the Halton Museum Foundation has developed to support the second phase of a multi-phase improvement plan for the Halton Region Museum, located in Kelso Conservation Area in Milton. Proceeds will go towards the construction of a new Artifact Centre to house the Museum's 35,000 artifacts. Oakville resident to be honoured as pioneer amateur film maker John Straiton, long regarded as a pioneer in Canada's independent animation scene, is in Ottawa showing eight of his short films at this week's 30th annual Ottawa International Animation Festival. "I'm being presented as a pioneer of amateur film-making in the world," said Straiton, 84, a retired advertising executive who counts filmmaking among his artistic endeavours. The others include painting ­ he's donated paintings for Oakville Symphony Orchestra raffles ­ and making his own family Christmas cards. He has also written a book titled Of Women and Advertising in 1984 about the psychology of advertising to women. Straiton's films will be shown on Thursday and Saturday at the National Gallery Auditorium. "A pioneer in the Canadian independent animation scene from 1964 to 1987, John Straiton's technically innovative films explore depictions of psychology, sexuality and myth," wrote Patrick Jenkins in ASIFA News, a trade magazine published by the Association Internationale du Film d'Animation. "Now age 84, Straiton has produced an astonishing body of short animated films using animation techniques like plasticine, rotoscoping, cut outs and cel animation. "His films won over 80 awards at film festivals throughout the world, including a Genie Award (Canada's version of the Oscars) for his film Horseplay," wrote Jenkins. The repertoire of Straiton films to be shown include his first film, Portrait of Lydia created in 1964 and his last, Rock Video, made in 1987. The retired advertising executive got interested in filmmaking while working on a campaign to promote the Argus movie camera. Straiton has always considered himself to be an amateur filmmaker. A Life in Art opens at Beckett Fine Art Gallery Joe Rosenthal's A Life in Art opens Saturday at Oakville's Beckett Fine Art. The 85-year-old Canadian artist's sculptures, paintings and drawings will be showcased in this second of two-part retrospective exhibition, which opened at the Beckett Toronto gallery on Sept. 16. A native of Romania, Rosenthal came to Toronto as a child and began showing unusual artistic talent. By age 14, he was studying art at Central Technical School in Toronto. At age 20, Rosenthal won a national poster competition put on by the Art Gallery of Toronto in 1942 for his poster of a war image entitled, All Out for Victory. From 1942 ­ 1945, he joined the Canadian Army and during his service won first prize in the Canadian Army Exhibition. When he returned to Toronto, Rosenthal studied at the Ontario College of Art and in the years after, became known for his printmaking, drawing, painting and sculpture. His figurative sculptures have won praise both nationally and internationally. Rosenthal has received numerous awards including first prize in the National Open Sculpture Competition for the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Monument. A Life in Art opens Saturday, Sept. 23 from 1 ­ 4 p.m. at Oakville's Beckett Fine Art Gallery, 41 Lakeshore Rd. W. Rosenthal will be present at the opening. The show runs to Oct. 14.
