22 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 27, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Trainer will address social issues of dogs before they are adopted Continued from page 19 "Additional staff and resources will allow us to shorten the stay of a dog waiting for adoption, make the stay in the shelter more comfortable and beneficial, produce a more adoptable pet and increase the chances of a successful, permanent adoption," continued Golder. "Most of the dogs brought to the shelter for adoption have little or no training and are not sociable. A lot of these dogs have social issues that have never been addressed. "We want to make the stay as short as possible and we're aiming for final adoptions. Socializing the dogs is a major goal." She mentioned the possibility of the shelter being able to offer dogtraining classes and thus bring revenue to the shelter. "We also encourage responsible pet ownership with spaying and neutering, and now we can add training and socialization. In the future we could encourage people who adopt dogs to sign up for training classes," said Golder, adding the training will follow a positive reinforcement philosophy rather than reprimanding bad behaviour. A trainer will benefit dogs waiting for adoption, said Beverlie Rockliffe. "We now have a goal to fund the society for a trainer." The funds are raised from donations, the sale of food and two auctions. The silent auction raised about $13,000 while the live auction netted $15,000. Live auction items included a week's use of a vacation home in Connecticut, catered dinners, a Tim Hortons Schwinn bicycle, pig sculptures by artist Andrew Benyei, afternoon or evening sail for four, two platinum level seats for at the Air Canada Centre, a suite for the weekend at the Chic Vogue Hotel in Montreal, champagne and picnic dinner cruise for six couples, original art and a Hockey Night in Canada collector's jersey signed by Don Cherry and Ron MacLean. Golder expects the new dogtraining program will start this fall. Wilma Blokhuis can be reached at blokhuis@haltonsearch.com BRING A FRIEND FOR OUR SPECIAL DEALS!
