Barring a sudden rush of interested candidates over the next two days, nearly all Oakville school trustee positions for the coming municipal term will be filled by acclamation. The town's voters are entitled to elect four trustees to both the Catholic and the public school board. But with the Sept. 29th filing deadline looming, it appears that seven of the eight positions will be filled without an election. As of press time, the only contested trustee position in Oakville is for the Wards 5/6 seat on the Halton District School Board. Incumbent Kelly Amos will face off against fellow trustee Bruce Jones, who represented Wards 1/ 2 over the last three years. Jones, who lives in the Ward 5/6 area, said he decided to run there this election because his three years at the board table convinced him of the strong importance of representing his home district. In the 2003 election for trustees, when Jones was first elected, there was no incumbent running in the Ward 1/2 area where he opted to run. With several incumbents vacating their seats this election, the remaining three public school trustee positions appear likely to be filled by board newcomers. In Ward 1/2, Don Vrooman is the only candidate registered to run in the vacancy left by Jones. Phillippa Ellis is unchallenged for the Ward 3 seat that is currently held by Mary Chapin, who has registered to run for a position on town council.
