The study, called Landscape by the Numbers: A Social Atlas of Halton, was presented to Halton's Planning and Public Works Committee Wednesday. It profiles the region's demographics and compares them to those in surrounding municipalities. "The comparisons portray a rich and diverse range of social characteristics among the municipalities in Halton, much of which is influenced by urban development, migration patterns and geographic position," the atlas explains. "One may say there is an uncanny relationship between the social and physical landscapes in Halton." Amongst its findings are that Halton has the lowest percentage of: visible minority groups, adults with less than a high school education and `blue collar' workers. The atlas also says when looking at Halton's four municipalities: · Oakville and Burlington have the highest concentrations of university-educated and high-income households · Oakville has the greatest proportion of visible minorities and highest income levels and unemployment rate · Burlington has the largest amount of seniors, rental housing, medium and high-density residential development and one-person households · Milton has the highest proportion of residents participating in the labour force and highest percentage of housing needing major repairs · Halton Hills has the youngest population, oldest housing stock and lowest level of unemployment · Both Milton and Halton Hills are ethnically the least diverse. In an interview, Regional Chair Joyce Savoline said she didn't think anything surprising came out of the atlas. "But, every document we produce is a base for learning," she said. "I think that we've been a community that always looks at every aspect of where we're at. It's another way Halton is a leader." The information is based largely on data gathered during the 2001 Census. Savoline emphasized the atlas will change in the years to come as the community grows. "It won't just be a stagnant document -- it will be active," she said. "It's an evolution."
