Getting a business off the ground can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially if you don't have the right contacts or a proper plan. "The Oakville Public Library has a substantive collection of print and electronic tools that help customers get the business information that they need," says Leslie Sutherland, Information Services Librarian for the Oakville Public Library. For those that are starting a new business, delving into new markets or looking for a prime business location in Halton, plan to attend an upcoming seminar, hosted by the W Halton Region's Business Development Centre (HRBDC) and the Oakville Public Library. The seminar is on Thursday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. in the Central Library Auditorium, 120 Navy St. Admission is free. Go to www.halton.ca/business or call 905-825-6000 to register. Oakville Public Library has four new business tools of interest to investors and/or entrepreneurs. The first is Canadian Business Online (CBO). This is an online directory of companies located in Canada. It covers over 1.3 million businesses, including public and private companies, government agencies, schools, consultants and other professionals. You can customize your search results to reveal company name, executive name, business size, sales volume, mailing address and telephone number. You may view, print or download five results per search. CBO is accessible from a designated computer within the Adult Information Department at the Central Branch as well as remotely from home. Go to the Online Resources link Small_PIONEER5_new.ai 9/19/2006 9:01:01 PM from our homepage at www.opl.on.ca to access CBO and other databases covering business information. Call 905-815-2042 ext 2044 or email our virtual help desk at oplreference@oakville.ca if you need assistance getting in. Entrepreneurs can track stocks and industry trends using one of three new print investment tools from the Central branch: Investor's Digest, Barron's and Value Line Investment Survey. Barron's is a premier business and financial weekly, published by Dow Jones. Value Line, another weekly newsletter, tracks approximately 1,700 stocks in over 90 industries. Investor's Digest is Financial Post's newsletter on current stocks and trades. All three provide sound information on current company financial statistics, changes in officers and personnel, mergers and acquisitions, market and industry trends, and other business-related news. Demographic data on Oakville and beyond is also available for market research in print and online from the library. Sutherland reminds library users that all branches offer word processing and spreadsheet facilities, weekend and evening hours, with wireless Internet connection. "Check out OPL's website for more details on how the library can accommodate your business needs," she adds. -- Submitted by the Oakville Public Library.
