They say the reasons for the event which is being hosted for the first time in town at Oakville Place include rallying together in the fight against breast cancer; doing something for yourself and the ones you love; celebrating survival; friends, family and fun. "What a great way to spend a Sunday morning," said Canadian Cancer Society Oakville Unit Manager Mary Ellen Frederick. "There is a real emphasis on community." Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer, which started elsewhere three years ago - is a leisurely 5K, non-competitive, pledge-based walk (plus a 1K Family Fun Walk) taking place during the fall in communities across Ontario. This family-friendly event will raise money to fund important breast cancer research and is a wonderful way to celebrate survivors in the community and remember those who have lost their lives to the disease. It will also act as the culmination of Breast Health Awareness Month, which happens in October. This is an indoor event on the main floor of Oakville Place, so no need to worry about the weather. Its 5K distance is equivalent to walking around Tree bylaw may be axed Opponents convince committee to rethink controversial bylaw By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF People love their trees in Oakville. They frown on clear cutting, but don't want the Town to clamp down on clear cutting by going through their yards and telling them what to do with their beloved trees. And Oakville Town Council appears to be backing away from an onerous and expensive private tree bylaw that has outraged residents across town. In fact, it's moving off any type of private tree bylaw, watered down or tough. It will, however, continue to beat the bushes to find another way to stop clear cutting by developers. Despite an admitted hasty, but well-meaning attempt to do right by the environment by saving trees and stop clear cutting by developers, council has learned that going through residents to get at the larger issues won't wash with residents. In Oakville, a town named for trees, people are passionate about trees and that passion took the stage at the Town's Community Services Committee Tuesday.
