Registration at Oakville Place, 240 Leighland Ave., begins at 7:30 a.m. (breakfast provided by Tim Hortons in the food court) followed by opening ceremonies at 8:45 a.m., hosted by Wave 94.7 FM's midday host Vickie Van Dyke. During the opening ceremonies there will be a special recognition of breast cancer survivors when they will be acknowledged and celebrated for their courage in fighting this disease. The walk itself takes place at 9 a.m., starting with a victory lap by those survivors in attendance. Entertainment in the mall's centre court will be provided by the Superficials, a band of four high school-age musicians known for their social conscience and their performances at such events as the Oakville Waterfront Festival and Relay For Life. "They're always ready to help out the Canadian Cancer Society," said Moffatt. For more information and to pre-register as a survivor and/or participant, as well as to purchase an in-honour message, call the Society's Oakville Unit at 905-8455231. Also register by visiting www.cancer.ca and follow the links to Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer. Pledges can also be made online. Tax receipts will be issued for donations of $20 or more. Participants can register as individuals or build a team of friends, family or co-workers. Moffatt said everyone is welcome, from students to children. Oakville Unit volunteers will also be at Oakville Place on Oct. 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29 to register participants. As a pledge-based event, there is no registration fee. Those who raise the minimum $75 or more will receive an official Canadian Cancer Society Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer shirt. Moffatt said the Unit's goal is to have at least 150 participants but, given local residents' past record of generosity, more are expected. "Oakville always comes together for a good cause," she said. If it hasn't already, breast cancer will touch you or someone you know. In Canada, over 21,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. In fact, one in nine Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is not just a woman's disease, however, but touches spouses, partners, children, parents, siblings, friends and coworkers. It's a trainer that gives support in more ways than one.
