www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 30, 2006 - 13 Blakelock challenges other schools to build the best float The Oakville Santa Claus Parade introduces a new judging category this year; Best School Float. This is a great chance for schools throughout Oakville to showcase their school spirit and creativity by participating in their community. Last year's winner, T.A. Blakelock High School, won for Best Community Float and Best Overall Float. "We were thrilled with our win last year," says Julie Harmgardt, Blakelock's float organizer. "It was a lot of work getting the float together, however, when we saw the cheering crowd and the kids' big smiles, it was all worth it." Harmgardt rode as the head elf on their float titled, Christmas Photo with the TAB Tiger. The float featured their school mascot, students dressed as presents, a jack- in- the- box and many green and red elves. This year, Blakelock is challenging other Oakville schools to join them in creating their own school float. The winning school will receive an award that can be displayed in their awards case for the year, along with a group photo plaque to last for years to come. School bands are welcome to participate in the parade as well. School entries can include a small band on their float or have their marching band play the streets of downtown Oakville. Entry forms for the Oakville Santa Claus Parade are now available online. Entries are already coming in for this year's parade. Remember, the deadline for entries is the first 50 entries received, or Oct. 27, whichever comes first. Now in its 58th year, the Oakville Santa Claus Parade is a cherished tradition in our Town. The 2006 Parade takes place Saturday, Nov. 18, beginning at 9 a.m. and will follow a new route. This year's Parade will begin at Lakeshore Road and Reynolds, go west on Lakeshore to Kerr Street, north on Kerr and end at Kerr and Stewart Streets. The Santa Claus Parade is always looking for volunteers to assist on Parade Day to ensure the Parade runs smoothly. Information about the various volunteer opportunities can be found online. For entry forms and information on the School Challenge or volunteering with the Parade, visit our website at www.oakvillesantaclausparade.ca or leave a message at 905-815-5981. -- Submitted by the Oakville Santa Claus Parade Committee.
