www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 30, 2006 - 15 Final registration day sees last minute filings Four sitting councillors acclaimed By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The 2006 municipal election campaign has officially begun. It will end on Nov. 13 -- Voting Day. Yesterday -- at 5 p.m. -- was the deadline for candidates to register with the Town of Oakville Clerk their intention to seek public office -- be it the mayor's job, Town or Town/Regional council seats, or posts as trustees with the local public and Catholic school boards. Candidates had to register by 5 p.m. or wait until the 2010 election. And while they can't register any more, they still have until 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2 to change their mind and withdraw. After that, their name will be on the election ballot on Nov. 13. For the first time in many years, Oakville will see a multi-pronged race for the mayor's office. Incumbent Ann Mulvale who has held the job for nearly two decades is being challenged by 2003 mayoral challenger Rob Burton as well as two sitting councillors -- Ward 6 Town/Regional Councillor Janice Wright and Ward 3 Town Councillor Chris Stoate, and Chancery Lane resident Daniela Z. Giecewicz who registered at the last minute Friday. Earning acclamations -- no one challenged their nomination -- are a quartet of incumbent councillors. In Ward 1, Town Councillor Ralph Robinson has been acclaimed -- not new for the veteran west end politician who has had that experience before in his more than two decades on Town council. Also acclaimed is Ward 2 Town Councillor Cathy Duddeck. In Ward 3, long-time Councillor Keith Bird has been acclaimed. In Ward 4, Town/Regional Councillor Allan Elgar who has two terms on council was acclaimed. The only opponent registered to run against him, Robert Wagner of Madden Boulevard, withdrew. To look at the races that will take place, moving across town from west to east -- south, then north, will see a race for the Ward 1 Town/Regional council position as first-term councillor and Oakvillegreen Conservation Association Inc. founder Michael Lansdown stepped down after three years on. In that race are former Town of Oakville employee Margaret Mercer of Water's Edge Drive, Lakeshore Road West resident Michael Glynne who has been commodore of the Bronte Harbour Yacht Club and chair of the Oakville Taxpayers' Coalition and Hixon Street resident Alan Johnston who chairs the Bronte District Advisory Committee. There is also a race for the Ward 2 Town/Regional council position. Incumbent, veteran councillor and former Oakville police chief Fred Oliver is up against Chatsworth Avenue resident Glenn Woolfrey, an insurance executive and Santa Claus parade volunteer who's involved in the Canadian Forces' Naval Reserve and long-time Oakville resident and businessman John Hogg. In east Oakville's Ward 3, the Town council seat vacated by Stoate is up for grabs. In the race here are numerous people including former public school board trustee and chair Mary Chapin, Blenheim Crescent resident Scott McColeman and minor sports veteran Wayne Moorehead of Greeniaus Road. Registering Friday were two more candidates, Stephen Cowan of Reynolds Street and Andrew Pask of Beechnut Road. In Ward 4, Town Councillor Renee Sandelowsky who just finished her first term on council said she won't be running again. Instead Sandelowsky has thrown her support behind newcomer Roger Lapworth of Arbourview Drive who will be competing against businessman and former Halton MADD president Jeff Gareau of Bonnybank Court who also ran for election in 2003. Sequoia Way resident Jorge Urena who'd registered as a candidate in June, withdrew Friday. Ward 5 has races for both its Town and Town/Regional council positions. Incumbent Marc Grant is being challenged by former Ward 5 Town Councillor Janice Caster as well as GreenTrans supporter Brian Hopkins and John Ransom of Roxton Road. Mah-mood Khan who had registered to run in early July, withdrew in midSeptember. Veteran Ward 5 Town/Regional Councillor Jeff Knoll is also being challenged by Margot Street resident Angus Scott who first announced he'd run for the Halton Regional chair's position, but then withdrew to instead seek his ward's regional council seat. A number of candidates are hoping to come up the winner in Ward 6 as Wright vacates and incumbent Councillor Tom Adams aims to win the ward's Town/Regional council role. His competition lies in Marius Frederick of Marlborough Court. Pilgrim's Way resident Max Khan had registered, but withdrew to instead file his candidacy for Ward 6's Town council role. Khan will have competition for the Town council position from Milorad Mitrovic of White Oaks Boulevard, Maria Robinson of Holton Heights, John Hussein of Golden Briar Trail, Del McIntee of Nichols Drive and late entries Emmett Sullivan of Robarts Road and Joseph Kus of Stationmaster Lane. On other fronts, as long-time Halton Region Chair Joyce Savoline steps down, the position is being sought by former Oakville and Halton politician and Ontario Speaker of the House Gary Carr, long-time Oakville resident and retired businessman Brian Burton, Robert Plaschka who lives on Burlington's Elmhurst Crescent and ACCLAIMED: From left, Ward 1 Councillor Ralph Robinson, Ward 2 Councillor Cathy Duddeck, Ward 3 Councillor Keith Bird and Ward 4 Councillor Allan Elgar. Brent Marsall of Halton Hills, the Region's CAO who registered late Friday. Running for the office of public school trustee with the Halton District Board of Education include for the combined Wards 1/2: Bruce Grant of Woodhaven Park Drive, Don Vrooman of Savoy Crescent and Danielle Prpich of Spring flower Way. In Ward 3 Philippa Ellis of Aspen Forest Drive faces a race with Mark Caskenette of Trafalgar Road. In Ward 4 competition is fierce among a quartet of candidates including: Kathryn BatemanOlmstead of Roxborough Drive; Jeff Middel of Stornoway Circle; Vangie Travis of Pepperbush Place and Mohan Anand of Roxborough Drive.' The Ward 5/6 public school trustee's seat is being sought by both veteran trustees Kelly Amos or River Oaks Boulevard West and Bruce Jones of Carrier Lane. At the Halton District Catholic School Board where four trustees are elected at large there are double that number in the running including: veterans Ed Viana and Alice Ann LeMay, as well as Tim D'Souza, Paul DeMelo, Pauline Houlahan, Anthony Danko, Joe Cordiano and Susan Jovanovic, Win Shalton and Michael O'Donovan.
