30 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 30, 2006 Sailing a breeze for high schoolers OAK swimmers selected for provincial training camp Three Oakville Aquatic Club swimmers have been selected to take part in a provincial training camp in Sudbury. Erin Assman, 13, and 16-year-olds Curtis Samuel and Zack Chetrat will participate in the Swim Ontario Fall Provincial Training Camp at Laurentian University the first weekend in October. Selections were made based on the 24 highest performing swimmers in the province for each birth year, ages 17 and under. Samuel and Chetrat have also been chosen to compete at the Bergen Junior International Short Course Championships in Portland, Oregon in December. They will be among 18 swimmers representing Ontario. "The price for success is paid in advance. If you want good results, you have to be willing to put in the time, dedication and commitment to achieve your goals," said OAC head coach Christy Fonseca. "These three swimmers trained and competed all summer long, into late July, in order to try to achieve their goals. The reward is reflected in their outstanding results in the pool and the amazing opportunities that these provincial and national tour teams will provide them." Chetrat will also be on the Swimming Canada youth team that will go to Sydney, Australia in January to compete in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. Chetrat earned himself a place on the team with a 14th place finish in the 200m butterfly at the Pan Pacific Trials in Montreal this summer. His performance made him the topranked 15-year-old in the country. JOE O'CONNAL / SPECIAL TO THE OAKVILLE BEAVER CLEAR SAILING: Justin Hall adjusts his sail as he gets ready to make a turn at the Ontario High Schools Sailing Championships held last Saturday at the Oakville Yacht Squadron. Having a blast Hinchcliffe blazes around track in preparation for Dutch race Carrying Canada's colours seems to agree with James Hinchcliffe. Hinchcliffe, racing for his country in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsports, turned in the fastest time in the opening practice session in Zandvoort, Holland. On his fourth lap around the 4.18 kilometre track, Hinchcliffe James Hinchcliffe turned in a time of one minute, 28.994 seconds. Hinchcliffe was selected to drive for the A1 Team Canada along with Vancouver's Sean McIntosh after a pair of promising test drives behind the wheel of the GP car. "The team did a phenomenal job today, they gave me a great race car and I'm just excited to be here racing for A1 Team Canada for the first time. Zandvoort's an awesome track and the number of fans here today for a Friday practice session is just incredible. I'm still learning little nuisances with the car and the track's still new to me but to get a car capable of going fastest on my competitive debut is a great testament to the team." "It's a tremendous boost for James to set the fastest Friday time on his very first A1GP race weekend," said John Surtees, the A1 Team Canada Consultant and 1964 Formula One World Champion. "The whole A1 Team Canada crew did a fantastic job and it bodes well heading into qualifying." When Hinchcliffe wrapped up his rookie season on the Champ Car Atlantic series last weekend, it wasn't the end of the season for the Oakville driver. After the final race of the Atlantic season, the 19-year-old packed his bags for Holland. "I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to race for my country and to have the opportunity to take the first start of the season is just amazing," Hinchcliffe said. The circuit, which runs from October to April, pits nation against nation. Twenty-three countries are vying for top honours. GRAHAM PAINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER BUNKER BLUES: Eve Willis blasts out of a bunker at the ninth green but can at least laugh about it as the ball ends up in the rough short of the green. Willis was among the golfers at the 18th annual Mayor's Invitational Golf Tournament in support of the Oakville United Way, last Tuesday at Royal Ontario Golf Course.
