The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 30, 2006 - 31 Rangers win Markham Earlybird tournament The Oakville atom A Rangers edged Cobourg 3-2 to win the Markham Waxers Earlybird Tournament. The Rangers won five straight games to claim the championship. The Rangers took first place in their pool with shutout victories over Markham and Nobleton-King and a 6-5 win over Cobourg. In the semifinal the Rangers topped Lasalle 4-1 to reach the final. The Rangers posted another victory, opening the Tri-County season with a 4-0 win over Brampton. Atom AAA Rangers Goalies Matthew Gwillam and Josh Morton allowed just one goal as the Oakville atom AAA Rangers opened the season with back-to-back victories. Gwillam stopped two breakaways to earn the shuout in a 6-0 season-opening win over St. Catharines. Trail blocker Local paddlers to compete in prestigious outrigger race Five local athletes will take part in the treacherous Molokai Hoe next Sunday. Derek Schrotter, Larry Cain, Peter Buday, Tamas Buday and Kyle Jeffery will be part of the nine-member Team Pogue that will compete in the 41-mile open ocean race that begins on Molokai Island and ends in Waikiki, Oahu.
