18 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 4, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Surprise plaque presentation to supportive father of TS boy Continued from page 15 Last year, Calvin was among 40 kids who spent a week at Camp Prospect near Mansfield. The Tourette Syndrome Association of Ontario (TSAO) pays $700 of the $800 cost to send a child to camp. The organization was formed in 1997 by Rick and Ruth Hensley of Barrie. Their 27-year-old son had been diagnosed with "super severe" TS. The couple made a recent surprise visit to Cox at East Side Mario's to present with a corporate award recognizing his fundraising efforts. Cox joined the Oakville, Burlington and Hamilton TS Support Group four years ago. He is its fundraising and special events chair. The group meets the second Tuesday of each month at Knox Presbyterian Church, 461 Elizabeth St., Burlington, from 7:30 9 p.m., "We're a grassroots organization providing support to families," said Rick Hensley, TSAO's executive director. His wife Ruth is the organization's ombudsman for children. "We don't raise funds for research. We help families with their day to day living and give kids with TS a positive life experience." Hensley said 70 per cent of families his organization supports are single mothers. Tics, explained Hensley, are caused by an imbalance of the neurochemicals (dopamine) in the brain, and "60 70 per cent of those with TS also have obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and 50 per cent have attention deficit disorder (ADD). "Some also have rage and aggression, opposition defiance and sensory integration disorders," he said, "all of them spin-offs from the neurochemical imbalance. For 20 years it's been clearly known that it's never not just a case of a kid having tics." TS is a medical disorder, he said. "We receive between 2,500 and 3,000 calls a year from people in crisis," said Hensley. See Most page 24 The Regional Municipality of Halton Expropriations Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. E.26.
