TSAO operates the only 24-hour information and support line for TS in Canada, at 1-888-274-2226. TS also creates difficulties for the education system, Hensley continued, explaining a child with TS lags behind in their social skills during the growing up years. "In their late teens and early 20s the tics from TS seem to get better." Hensley said "helping the education system understand there is a huge difference between behaviour that is a byproduct of bad parenting and a poor environment and behaviour driven by a neurochemical imbalance. New coping strategies are required, such as reducing the time required for a child with TS to be "good" from 60 minutes to 40 minutes, for example, he said. "They need one-to-one support to stay on task instead of being sent to the principal's office that frustrates these children even more." TS effects one in about every 100 children, about 75 per cent of them boys. "A lot of these kids have been misdiagnosed as having allergies. TS involves both vocal and physical tics and if they are evident for more than a year, it's TS. Each large school has at least one TS student. "If we could isolate the gene for TS then a diagnosis would be as easy as drawing blood," said Hensley, "and the number of cases would mushroom and we would get caught flat-footed. Now a diagnosis is made by observation." TS was first diagnosed in 1825. By 1883, French neurologist Dr. Georges Gilles de la Tourette described the involuntary tics; hence the disorder was named after him. It is believed Mozart and Samuel Johnson, creator of the English dictionary, had the disorder. "It doesn't affect one's IQ," said Hensley. The organization has no paid staff and is supported by The Foresters, Toronto Police Association and the Peel Regional Police Auxiliary Officers.
