With some 36 years working for the region under his belt, the 56-year-old Halton Hills resident made his surprise candidacy official late Friday afternoon, the last day for registration in the Nov. 13 election. In filing for the chance to win the chair, Marshall retired as the CAO, a position he had held since the late 1990s. "I wanted to make it clear to the citizens of Halton this wasn't just an attempt to become regional chair, it was a serious commitment by me," he said. Marshall joins three others -- businessman Brian Burton, former MP Gary Carr and elec- trical engineer Robert Plaschka - in the battle to become the next regional chair for 2006-2010. Joyce Savoline, the current chair, announced earlier this year she would not be seeking re-election, creating what stands to be the first close election since the chair became a publicly-elected position in 2000. In that municipal race and the following 2003 campaign, Savoline won both times handily. Given an incumbent was not seeking relection, and citing the registered pool of candidates and his experience as CAO, Marshall said it made sense to jump into the ring now. His priorities include ensuring visionary leadership, a strong economy and quality of life.
