28 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 4, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Celebrating 20 years in Oakville Oakville's Jensen Tire celebrated 20 years in business and honoured its founder with a charity event recently. With their main objective to raise as much for the Cancer Society as possible, prices were lowered and the 20th Anniversary Charity Event featured a free BBQ all day, live music, fun for kids including a clown and bouncy castle, and displays including Michael Schumacher's Ferrari F1 Display Car, Patrick Carpentier's IRL Display Car and an F1 Interactive Racing Simulator. The anniversary charity event also featured a silent auction including products donated from areas businesses. The Canadian Cancer Society was in attendance to answer questions and take donations. In addition to the silent auction proceeds, $5 from the sale of each tire on the big day went to the Canadian Cancer Society. Audi claims a 0-96 km/h (0-60 mph) time of seven seconds for the 4.2, which is quick but not explosively so for a V8-engined performance SUV. And that's about the way it feels. The engine has a good spread of power, though. Max power arrives at a highwinding 6,800 rpm, but there's no obvious weakness at lower rpm. What there is at modest speeds is a fair amount of engine rumble and burble, which is probably the way "truck" buyers like it -- this isn't one of those serene V8s that hums like an electric motor. There's even some audible burble from the tailpipe in cruise mode, though that's in part because there's little noise from other usual sources to mask it. The test vehicle had the adaptive air suspension, which happened to be set in Dynamic mode when we took delivery. The result was an almost brutal ride in our first few kilometres of pothole- and manhole-scarred urban streets. Greater familiarity on a wider range of surfaces, combined with samplings of the suspension's Comfort and Automatic settings, revealed that a reasonable level of ride comfort can be achieved, and even the Dynamic setting becomes mellower at open-road velocities. There's a similar dual-personality in the handling. At urban speeds the experience is spoiled by what feels like rather low-geared steering that needs a fair bit of twirling to get around tight turns (and the turning circle is a pretty leviathan 12.0 metres). Find an empty country road to hustle along and you'll easily forget you're driving a 5.1-metre, 2,500 kg "truck." The huge rubber, allwheel-drive, stability control and a feature called dynamic roll stabilization, all work in concert to give the driver a sense that nothing will ever deflect the Q7 from the path you have chosen for it. If that athleticism draws from the Q7's A6 roots, so do some of its less likable dynamic traits. At anything much above parking speeds the steering has a mushy on-centre feel and its variable effort doesn't always vary in ways you'd expect. Also, if you pride yourself on driving smoothly, the sharp throttle tip-in and grabby brake pedal will force you to try that much harder to achieve it. Nit-picks apart, the Q7 is an impressive hunk of machinery that meets its maker's mandate and is chock-full of thoughtful and innovative features too numerous to mention here. Despite its performance abilities, the Q7 failed to touch me emotionally at any level, but maybe that's because I prefer my Audis smaller and closer to the ground. If you also like Audis, but you want an SUV, your ship just came in WALKERS
