Wildcats strong again this season Continued from page 32 Halton finalists. Jenna Bull, a provincial level player and team captain, leads a veteran squad that also includes returnees Megan Dunbar, Beth Iley and Nyrie Israelian. Groen said having stiffer competition will help the Devils in the long run. "It helps us build for the playoffs. If you play better games (during the season), the better you will be for the playoffs," he said. "We're looking "It helps us build forward to the playoffs for the playoffs. If but it's still one game you play better and anything can hapgames (during pen." One team that the season), the learned that lesson last better you will be season is one of the for the playoffs." teams vying to knock off the Red Devils this year. OT coach Jim The White Oaks Groen, commenting Wildcats were 4-2 last on the competitive season, finishing just Volpe Division two points back of OT in the Volpe standings. However, the Wildcats were upset by Iroquois Ridge in the opening round of the playoffs. This year, the Wildcats are looking even stronger. They improved to 6-1 Monday with 2-0 wins over St. Thomas Aquinas and T.A. Blakelock. White Oaks' only loss was a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Oakville Trafalgar, a game Wildcats coach Tara McMinn believes her team easily could have won. Led by captains Jessica Moore and Missy Kennedy, White Oaks has outscored the opposition 13-2 in its first six games. Although there are just six returnees on the 19-player roster, McMinn didn't expect the club would take a step back. "When this team was together as juniors, they were a fairly strong team," she said. "Most of the girls have played since the beginning of high school so they've played three or four years. The level of competition is a lot higher, too, and they're really developing their skills." Two White Oaks players, Kennedy and Sarah Curry, won gold medals at the Ontario Summer Games. However, not all the Wildcats players are experienced. Kayla Power, a first-year field hockey player, recorded her fourth and fifth shutouts of the season. She faced strong pressure by Aquinas in the second half of the opening game. "That was probably the most action our defence has seen this season," McMinn said. "They weren't even that busy in the OT game." By the half, Moore and Amy Tinsley had already scored to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage. "The girls are playing to their ability," said Rajani RaoPeters, who coaches the team with McMinn. "We've got strong leaders and that motivates the rest of the team. They've just developed as a team." Others vying for top spot in the Volpe Division are Aquinas (5-1-1), Iroquois Ridge (4-2-1) and Holy Trinity (4-3-0). Aquinas leapfrogged Iroquois Ridge by rallying for a 2-1 win over the Trailblazers Monday. Trinity remained in the hunt with a 3-0 victory over E.C. Drury and a 4-0 shutout of Georgetown. The Volpe Division season continues today with five games. -- Herb Garbutt can be reached at sports@oakvillebeaver.com.
