www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 6, 2006 - 31 Musician writes ty'SOLOS series of five music books By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Tyler Seidenberg wants to give kids a reason to stick with piano. That's why the 19-year-old King's Christian Collegiate graduate recently published ty'SOLOS, a series of piano books he composed that aren't like most on the music store shelves. "There isn't a lot of kids' music like this out there, which is fun and imaginative," said Seidenberg, who's been playing piano since age five. "I wanted to create some fresh, new stuff. This is an alternative to a lot of the older curriculum." Jazzy tunes, jingles, '80s music and even some songs that sound like video game background music are included in the series, which ranges from beginner to a Grade 10 level. "I tried to write it in different styles I thought kids would like. It keeps their interest because they want to learn the songs," said Seidenberg, who just started his first year on a music scholarship at Los Angeles' Azusa Pacific University. He even wrote a song about his favourite drink, Orangina, in a 1950s commercial jingle style. "I thought, I really like that drink, I'm going to make a song about it," he said, smiling. "It was songs like these the upbeat ones, that really kept me going when I was a kid going to piano." But, he says, the upbeat, catchy tunes were few and far between. "When I was learning, it was mostly classical. The classical stuff gets really stale after a while, and that's why people drop out, because they get bored." His hope with ty'SOLOS is to keep people interested in piano and not just kids. "It's a mix of the kiddy stuff and the more serious stuff, so adults will like learning from it too," said Seidenberg. "There are some really tough songs to play in the higher books." He composed the books while taking a year off after high school last year to work and tour full-time with God Rocks!, a kids' music group that teaches about the Bible through song and other creative ways. "I had some time while we were on the road, so I thought, I'm going to write some songs," he said. "We had a lot of time on the road." Seidenberg is still making DVDs, singing and doing voiceovers for God Rocks! while he's attending school in Los Angeles, but will no longer be touring with the band. "I'm looking forward to what's coming next," he said. "I'm excited for change. I think it's time for a change." Seidenberg will continue composing while he's at school, something he's been doing since age 10. In addition to ty'SOLOS, he has three songs published in two prestigious books compiled by the Canadian National Conservatory of Music. The conservatory invited Canadian composers to anonymously send in their work, and picked a handful of songs to publish in a series of books, which now feature the works of celebrated Canadian composers, including Remi Bouchard. "My teacher (Susan Mander) says to even be in the same book as these people is really good," said Seidenberg. "They're renowned Canadian composers, so it's just really cool that I'm in there with them." He's the youngest composer included in the books, which were just published by Mayfair Publishing. SABRINA BYRNES / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER MUSIC PUBLISHER: Tyler Seidenberg, 19, recently obtained a scholarship to attend Azusa Pacific University music school. He was touring with the band God Rocks! for the past few years and has written Ty'SOLOS, a series of five music books. "My teacher has really helped me a lot with everything, she really encouraged me to compose," said Seidenberg. "She's a music teacher, so she knows what music teachers are looking for." In the future, he hopes to compose and produce music for films and for other artists, so that he's not only composing in the genre that suits his musical style. "I want to write in all different styles, because it's fun to do that," he said. "I don't want to be a performer, I'd rather be the person who wrote it or produced it. I want to be one of those guys in the music industry that no one really knows." Seidenberg's ty'SOLOS are currently available at Notes and Leslie Music in Oakville.
