Loyola improved to 3-0 on the season with a 47-34 victory, paced by a 20point performance from Jen O'Brien. HERB GARBUTT / OAKVILLE BEAVER The Oakville Buzz is discovering there is a price for success -- especially in a developmental league. Glen Little, who coached Oakville's national junior B lacrosse championship-winning squad this season, has been hired as the general manager of the Burlington Chiefs junior A lacrosse team. Little will face a daunting task in turning around a team that went 0-22 last season and has missed the playoffs five years in a row, never winning more than six games in a season during that span. "It was going to be a rebuilding mode in Oakville," Little said. "Now it's going to be a rebuilding process in junior A." Buzz president Roger Thenhaus said Little will be missed particularly because of his unique ability to communicate with his players. "He could talk to kids at their level. He talked to them as though he were Glen Little one of them," Thenhaus said. "Whatever he said in the dressing room before the game or between periods, it seemed to work. I think they just fed off his passion to win and succeed." With the Chiefs, Little hopes to re-create the family atmosphere that was present on his Buzz squad but it's clear Little hasn't quite made the transition in his mind yet. "We're going to create a buzz... I mean, a vibe with this team," Little said. Although the job is one Little, a Burlington resident, has coveted for some time, he said it was difficult to part ways with the team he has coached for the past three years. "Heavy heart" "It's something I'm doing with a heavy heart but with a new passion," he said. "I'm going to miss the Hive and everything we've created. I'm leaving an organization I truly love." Little said Oakville junior players looking to play at the highest level will be welcomed by the Chiefs. "I want to get that homegrown talent from south Halton playing for the Chiefs," he said. "I want to create something in the south corridor where we're strong at both levels." Little's role with Burlington will be his first job as a gen Senior girls' Hawks off to 3-0 hoops start By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR See Timing page 36 Jen O'Brien and the Loyola Hawks believe they might finally be able to overtake the Nelson Lords for Halton high school senior girls' basketball AAA supremacy. The Hawks used a second-quarter surge to build a 10-point lead, then held off the Abbey Park Eagles down the stretch to earn a 47-34 win Wednesday at Abbey Park. The doubledigit margin of victory was Loyola's third in as many starts this season, and O'Brien believes the team's defensive tenacity is the main reason. "You can win a game 1-0, playing good defense," said the 16-year-old centre, who led the Hawks Wednesday with 20 points. "We have a couple really good three-point shooters that really help us out, and we like to fast-break, but defense is the key. We get a lot of steals and just fast-break it up." Loyola enjoyed a solid season last year and was one of few teams to give Nelson a decent test last year. The Lords rolled through Halton, including a 54-36 victory over the Hawks in the regional final, on their way to an OFSAA tournament appearance in 2005. "I think we have a better team than last year, and good things can happen when we play (Nelson)," said O'Brien. "We haven't seen them play this year so we don't know how they've changed; we just have to stay really focused and play good (defense)."
