www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday October 7, 2006 - 9 Guard keeps children safe on the street Continued from page 3 p.m. and 3 3:30 p.m., every day during the school year. "I'm outside and visible to the public. "The kids always ask me what I'm going to dress up as for Halloween and I tell them I'm going to be a crossing guard," he joked. All kidding aside, Arnold believes a cross- ing guard must have an identity easily recognized by both children and drivers. "Some drivers just don't see me...they don't see my stop sign. They're talking on their cell phones; they may be impatient, daydreaming to talking to others in the car. It's a challenge every day." He finds the kids at St. Matthew are "really good. "The kids always ask me what I'm going to dress up as for Halloween and I tell them I'm going to be a crossing guard." Jim Arnold Crossing guard "The kids and I get along very well. They are a well mannered bunch of kids, very polite," said Arnold. Some of them are the daughters and sons of people he once helped cross the street safely. "Quite often, young guys and young women stop to say hello and ask me if I remember them and I do." "I ask the kids for their names and it takes me about three to four days to catch on. It keeps my brain going." During the summer, he pursues his hobby. "I like to do a little woodcarving." Wilma Blokhuis can be reached at blokhuis@haltonsearch.com. All other aspects of the job, the five W's who, what, when, where, why and how, haven't changed. During my tenure I've written about the growth of the United Way of Oakville from raising a few thousand dollars to distributing more than $2 million every year to meet local social needs, the formation and success of the Community Foundation of Oakville which amassed $10 million in endowed funds during its first 10 years and doubled its assets to $20 million in one year in 2005, the 50th anniversary of Community Living Oakville, an agency for intellectually handicapped people, the launch and success of Kerr Street Ministries which has a mandate to give those living in poverty, especially poor kids, a hand a dream come true to Ron Shantz who grew up poor and now wishes to give back and help others. Oakville is full of people reaching out and helping each other and internationally. Barry and Mary Jane Howie come to mind with their zeal to vaccinate every child in the Third World against polio. Rex Bailey was determined to provide limbs to those who lost legs to landmines. Verna Andrews works tirelessly to rid the world of landmines, weapons of war left behind after the battle is over, through the Canadian Landmine Foundation. And, who can forget Joan Gibb and her more than 30 years of volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society. The results of her enthusiasm and skillful organization are evident in the Terry Fox Run it was her idea back in 1980 to `finish' the run left uncompleted by the late onelegged athlete running a marathon a day across Canada and raise some $20 million one dollar for every Canadian. Joan also initiated Oakville's highly successful Relay for Life, a 12-hour overnight event with loads of camaraderie at Appleby College highlighted by a cancer survivors' lap and a poignant luminary ceremony. I'm proud to say Joan and I have become great friends. In journalism school we were told not to become friends with your contacts, however, I broke the CIBC Investor Services Inc.
