22 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday October 7, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com STUDENT EXCELLENCE 2006 Halton District School Board honours Oakville students In May, the Halton District School Board held its 22nd annual Celebration of Student Excellence, a special evening that recognized one student from each of the board's 90 schools. The honoured students are representative of exceptional qualities in at least two of the following areas: academic, vocational and athletic fields, self-improvement, community work, citizenship and leadership, or other specific criteria that reflects the school's unique priorities. Among the 90 students honoured were 31 from Oakville. · Ledor Babatinca, Grade 8, New Central -- Ledor Babatinca is an enthusiastic and dedicated student who exemplifies all of the qualities associated with this award. Ledor is an honour student, a member of several school teams, the New Central band and is also an accomplished and published poet. · Kendra Barclay, Grade 5, Linbrook -- Kendra consistently demonstrates academic excellence and outstanding leadership throughout all her years at Linbrook. In this her graduating year, Kendra has been a Kindergarten helper, a morning announcer, a student announcer, a student tribes council member, a duchess for Carnaval, a member of our Cross Country Running Team, our Track and Field Team and our Linbrook Choir. · Adam Bassett, Grade 6, Gladys Speers -- Adam Bassett is a very diligent and conscientious student. He contributes to the Gladys Speers Public School community through his enthusiastic involvement in a variety of school activities. Adam is a thoughtful and kind individual who has developed strong leadership skills and is a positive role model for others. · David Campbell, Grade 8, Abbey Lane -- David's level of academic achievement in all curriculum areas is of a very high standard, consistently achieving honour roll. He participates enthusiastically in sport and is a member of the Abbey Lane track and field, cross country and the Volleyball teams and demonstrates extraordinary talent in music. In all his endeavors David demonstrates a quiet, caring manner, yet is passionate, creative and hardworking. · Denver Cowan, Grade 8 Pilgrim Wood -- Denver is a dedicated student who puts forth his best effort at all times. He maintains a positive demeanor in both play and work situations without prompts. Volleyball and Basketball teams, a member of the Flag Football and Track and Field teams; and a coach of the Grade 6 Girls Volleyball team. As well, Hayleigh is a member of the school band and our School Parliament. Hayleigh is an Honours Student Award winner and recipient of the Eastview Merit award. · Amberlee Dorrington, Grade 5, Chisholm -- Amberlee is a happy, proactive, and positive leader who loves to dance, act, have fun and participate enthusiastically. She is keen to learn, understand and use her skills. Amberlee puts her heart into projects and presentations, and doesn't let a problem get in the way of achieving her best. · Erum Dost, Grade 8, Captain R. Wilson -- Erum was selected to represent Captain R. Wilson because of her contributions to the CRW community, her leadership and her constant willingness to help others. Erum is an academically strong student who volunteers to help her peers and her teachers. In 2005, Erum spearheaded the school's campaign to raise money for the Tsunami Relief Fund which raised more than $8,000. · Scott Downing, Grade 8, Falgarwood -- Scott is a role model for all Falgarwood students with his quiet style of leadershipship. His intrinsic motivation and commitment to learning are what define this student of excellence. His innate ability to reflect and refine his already outstanding academic, athletic and music skills are what set this young gentleman apart from his peers. · Brendan Farrer, Grade 12, T.A. Blakelock -- Brendan Farrer is an excellent student who has maintained a 93% average in each of his four years of high school. He has been heavily involved in the athletic program, playing an integral role on Blakelock's football, hockey and rugby teams. · Shereen Fayed Grade 5 Oakwood-- Shereen always strives to do her very best, and is always interested in ways that she can grow as a learner. She has always been especially interested in becoming involved in extra-curricular opportunities at Oakwood, included among them her involvement in our school play, and assisting with Primary classes at lunchtime.
