At press time Friday, representatives from the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) said talks were ongoing. However, they say they will probably not recommend the employer's final contract offer. A strike would close the doors at Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstores and Zehrs anytime after midnight last night. In Oakville, this would affect the Real Canadian Superstore on Oak Park Boulevard. "These negotiations have been difficult and complicated and they continue," said Wayne Hanley, UFCW's national director. "Legally a strike could begin as early as Oct. 6 at 12:01 a.m., but to date we have not set a strike deadline." A walkout would affect the Loblaws chain across the province at one of the busiest times of the year: Thanksgiving. Among the issues is the grocery chain's reported plan to lower wages and replace supermarkets with superstores. Loblaws is gearing up to compete with Wal-Mart, which has announced plans to enter the grocery business in Ontario. -- With Files from Torstar Newswire Wide Selection of Gift Baskets from $4 - $50 m Children's Carnival area (nominal charge) Raffle Tickets: $2 each or 3 for $5 with prizes 32" Panasonic TV · Pine Blanket Box Bookshelf · Framed Cross Stitched Angel olk Art Painted Telephone Stan g Somethin for all ages! 905-257-8434 or office@munnsunited.com Admissio n is FREE! SPACE AGE SHELVING The Storage Specialists In Home Consultation Weaver set to visit Ten Thousand Villages Ten Thousand Villages, at 189 Lakeshore Rd E., will offer an opportunity to interact with Kommaly Chanthavong, an artisan and workshop leader from Vientiane, Laos, Tuesday. Chanthavong and other artisans use traditional weaving techniques to create the exquisite Laotian textiles sold at the store. The visit, from 10 a.m. 4 p.m., demonstrates Ten Thousand Villages' unique relationship with its artisan partners. The store, which sells fairly-traded products handcrafted by skilled artisans in Africa, Asia and Latin America, creates cross-cultural connections between artisans and consumers by inviting artisans from around the world to visit the store, to demonstrate their craft and to share their story and life experiences with customers. "When customers hear artisans' stories first hand, they begin to understand and value the difference their purchase makes in the lives of artisans around the world," said store manager Ingrid Heinrichs Pauls Chanthavong and her husband Noulieme direct the Phon Tong Handicraft Cooperative, a Ten Thousand Villages artisan partner based in Laos. Started in 1980, Phon Tong Handicrafts works with Lao weavers and basket makers in lowland villages around Vientiane, the capital city of Laos. The craftswomen that Phon Tong works with intersperse weaving with housework and childcare, bringing valuable additional income to their households. Chanthavong was one of the 1,000 women who were jointly nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize. She also received the 2002 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Best Artist Award. For more information about this event, call the store at 905-337-2377.
