32 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 13, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville resident first in family to study medicine Gamal Seif is the first person in his extended family to be accepted into medical school. Recently, the 24-year-old Oakville resident who lived previously in Egypt and Mississauga was among 149 first-year medical students in the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine participating in McMaster University's 4th annual White Coat Ceremony at the Hamilton Convention Centre. "I feel my parents deserve credit as much as I do. The ceremony was an opportunity for them to see all their hard work bear fruit before their eyes," said Seif, who holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Waterloo and a master of science degree from the University of Toronto. Aware of Canada's aging population, and the neurological problems they will face, Seif ultimately aspires to work with seniors as a neurologist. More than 550 of the students' family and friends will were there for the ceremony, which is considered a "rite of passage" into medicine. During the ceremony, each new medical student receives a traditional white clerk's jacket emblazoned with the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine emblem recognizing entry of first year students into the medical profession and welcomes them as junior colleagues. This year's new medical students the graduating class of 2009 represent a wide range of ages and backgrounds. In age, they vary from under 19 to almost 40 years of age. They hold undergraduate degrees in accounting, arts, biomedical computing, business administration, education, engineering, history, social work and the sciences. Nine Aboriginal students are in the first year class. There are 90 women and 59 men. New classified ad process here The garlic festival is here.
