The show features works inspired by a trip Steeves took through the mountains of China and Tibet in May. Its name ­ Mudan ­ is after the Chinese term for `tree peony.' Steeves views flowers as a metaphor for both the fragility and beauty of life, and this year, she focused on the peony. It's a flower that first captured her imagination in both her grandmother's and mother's gardens. Steeves followed the most fleeting of blooms to its source in the mountains of China and Tibet. Travelling with several Chinese botanists, peony experts and others, she viewed and photographed the flower in the wild, growing in its natural surroundings in the midst of the spectacular landscape of Tibet. This is Steeves' fifth solo show at Abbozzo Gallery, and her art is also shown in other established galleries in Canada, all of her works flowing from her own experiences. Steeves was also the past president of the Ontario Society of Artists. Mudan opens tonight (Friday) from 7­10 p.m. at Abbozzo Gallery, 179 Lakeshore Rd.
