DiBon is a member of Oakville's first Taking Steps organizing committee and a participant in this five-kilometre walk to be held Nov. 5 at Oakville Place starting with registration and breakfast at 7:30 a.m. The aim of Taking Steps is to raise awareness and to raise funds for breast cancer research. Taking Steps has been held for five years in Canada and Oakville joins 34 communities in Ontario in hosting this event for the first time. DiBon was diagnosed in "You talk to yourself because you can't let this disease get you. I had cancer but cancer didn't have me." DiBon said she was determined to be a survivor. "I wanted to dance with my son on his wedding two years later, which I did, and I also wanted to hold my grandchildren." She has a five-month-old granddaughter. "Life is wonderful." DiBon was involved with the Oakville Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society from the beginning. "When I was first diagnosed I received telephone peer support." Today she volunteers with the Oakville Unit and with the Credit Valley cancer unit in its chemotherapy clinic. She has also participated as a survivor in the annual Relay for Life. The opening ceremonies for Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer will be held at the Centre Court at 8:45 a.m. and will feature survivor recognition. The walk starts at 9 a.m. There will also be a 1K Family Fun Walk. To register for Taking Steps as an individual, survivor or a team, visit www.cancer.ca or call the Oakville Unit at 905-845-5231.
