www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 20, 2006 - 9 Candidates agree on MASS facility, but question other issues Continued from page 8 Plan, that alone will not be adequate. Cooperative working partnerships -- between private and public sector to address the backlog in facilities, and between the town and development community to align interests -- are required, according to Stoate. Wright said intensification growth is a threat to existing neighbourhoods, particularly those south of the QEW, and that it has been pushed through with a broad brush by the Province -- and it needs to be challenged. Wright, who has served three years as a Ward 6 Town councillor and the last three as Ward 6's town/regional councillor, called for a visionary Official Plan to prevent spending tax dollars at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB). "We need to bring pride back into this town," said Wright, who said she has been effective in bringing various factions of the community together to determine solutions in her ward and that she can bring those skills to the town as a whole. Wright said residents should feel "like they belong to a town, not a postal code." Questions posed to the candidates ranged from the Music and Art Shared Space (MASS) project, "We need to bring pride back into this town." Mayoral candidate Janice Wright the private tree bylaw that was turned down by council, the fear of high-density development with infill such as witnessed in the Palm Place development on the former Shell House property and the plans for the Bronte Quadrangle. The mayoral candidates, along with the Town/Regional council candidates -- Margaret Mercer, Michael Glynne and Alan Johnston -- said they supported the MASS facility and favoured some regulation to stop clear cutting, rather than penalizing residents who care for their trees. Mercer told residents she has the background in communications and familiarity with the town to speak up on behalf of residents. Glynne said he has 40 years of business expertise that he would bring to the role. Johnston has already been involved in the town through various committees and school groups and has lived in Oakville more than 30 years. Glynne said he doesn't believe the OMB should exist at all, that negotiations should be between the Province and municipality. Mercer said the town should buy land and Johnston said the onus should be on a developer to prove why zoning should change. Johnston said the proposed butterfly skateway and park for Bronte Harbour should go ahead if its foundation comes up with the money and business plan. Glynne said, "This butterfly is dying. It's on life support and the MOU (memorandum of understanding with the Town) is going to kill it." Mercer, whose been vocal on the park, said people should "poop or get off the pot." She said the park has been a long time coming and that it's a sad story since most people would support it, but that "it's slightly unrealistic from a cost standpoint." By the time the regional chair candidates took the stage, candidate Brian Burton who hails from Ward 1 joked that he has more people at his Sunday dinner table. As the crowd dwindled, Brian Burton, who ran in 2003 against outgoing regional chair Joyce Savoline promised to control growth and its negative impacts, reduce tax hikes and provide more parking at the GO stations. "We're getting the growth we don't want and then we're getting the bill," said Brian Burton who was also critical of the proposed regional complex, the widening of Bronte Road and the associated costs with both. Burlington resident Robert Plaschka said his concerns include the state of nonrenewable resources like oil and natural gas. Lifelong Halton resident Brent Marshall, who just stepped down as Halton Region's CAO to run as its regional chair, defended the regional centre and Bronte Road widening as they were projects he directed as CAO. Former Oakville politician Gary Carr noted that he has a record of standing up for his constituents even if it flies in the face of his political leanings and will do so again if elected regional chair. He said the many contacts and relationships he has built in provincial and federal arenas will serve Halton well if he's elected.
