18 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 20, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com VON Halton severing ties with VON Canada After 76 years, VON (Victorian Order of Nurses) Halton is breaking its ties with VON Canada. As of Monday, it became an independent healthcare provider and charitable organization. The change was prompted by a VON Canada reorganization that would see the management, direction and accountability of local branches greatly diminished. After much deliberation, the VON Halton board of directors decided that continuing to be a locally-governed healthcare organization is the best way to effectively serve the needs of the community. As of Monday, VON Halton is no longer affiliated with VON Canada. The branch is a new corporate entity and a new name will be introduced for the not-for-profit, charitable, healthcare organization. "We understand the need of VON Canada to look for ways to streamline and standardize a national organization," said David Hayward, the local group's board chair. "However, it shouldn't be at the expense of local branches that provide healthcare services and programs tailored to the individual needs of their communities," he said. The new organization will continue to provide the same nursing, homemaking, Alzheimer and Corporate Wellness services to the same clients with the same staff and volunteers as was occurring with VON Halton. The major funders of healthcare services in the area will continue to honour contracts and service agreements negotiated with VON Halton. Likewise, any fundraising initiatives and donations received will continue to support charitable community programs such as the Alzheimer Seniors Day Program, Alzheimer Support and Counseling, Friendly Visiting, Special Steps, Hospice Visiting, Bereavement Services, People in Crises and Tele-touch Reassurance Services. "It's important to know that only our name will change," said Angela Brewer, the local group's executive director. "We will still be providing the same services and programs we have developed and been delivering to our community. Our clients will not see any interruption to the delivery or quality of services they currently receive," said Brewer. "We're quite excited about this bold step forward," said Hayward, "It will allow us to continue to maintain a local focus and provide greater management flexibility in order to effectively serve our community for a long time to come." Throughout its 76 year history of serving Halton and surrounding areas, VON Halton has continually provided innovative and unique solutions to meet the challenges of rapidly changing social and healthcare needs.
