4- The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 20, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Green party wooing Turner Continued from page 1 contained information brought up in caucus, Turner explained it was only on his Web site for one day before he was told by the whip that he had to take it down. "I complied," he said. "It was an example of me trying to be a team player." Turner acknowledged it's difficult for an independent MP to get things done and that he'll have to build relationships going forward. Since being kicked out of caucus, there has been much speculation as to whether Turner will join the Green Party. Halton Federal Green Party Association CEO Kyle Grice -- who was also the local Green Party candidate in the last election -- was in attendance at the press conference to chat with the Halton MP further about the possibility of going Green. Following the press conference, Grice emphasized to Turner that becoming a Green MP "would go down in the history books." "It's certainly something to consider," Turner said, noting he'll definitely speak with Green Party leader Elizabeth May in the next few days. Turner also told him that he'll have to listen to his constituents on the issue. For Grice, Halton's MP is just the kind of individual the Green Party is looking for. "We'll welcome him with open arms," he said. "We want an outspoken person just like Garth." The Halton Conservative riding association's executive held a meeting Wednesday night to discuss what transpired with Turner, but president Patrick Whyte said its members didn't take an official position on the suspension. "To me, suspension means it's temporary," he remarked. Turner said he's not sure if he's been expelled indefinitely, but he's considering it "a situation that's not going to end quickly." Turner's Web site, www.garth.ca, has been inundated with hits since the news broke about his suspension -- so much so that he said it "melted down" a few times yesterday. He said he has also received a flood of e-mails that were, for the most part, supportive. Now, Turner is turning to his constituents this weekend to get their opinions on how he should proceed to remain effective as an MP. He's holding a Town Hall meeting tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at the Tansley Woods Library, 1996 Itibashi Way, Burlington, and a second meeting in Kilbride Sunday at the Ella Foote Hall, 6611 Panton Rd., at 4 p.m. Those who can't make it to the meetings can still share their thoughts with Turner by calling his office at 905-693-0166 or e-mailing feedback@garth.ca or supportgarth@garth.ca. --With files from TorStar News Service Melanie Hennessey can be reached mhennessey@miltoncanadianchampion.com. at Make a difference!
