www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 27, 2006 - 19 Seven candidates competing for Ward 6 Town Council seat By Kim Arnott SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The town's busiest race in this year's municipal election campaign can be found in Ward 6, where seven candidates are seeking to fill the council seat held by Tom Adams for the last three years. Adams has opted to run for the Ward 6 regional seat vacated by Janice Wright, who is competing in a five-way race for the job as Oakville's mayor. Ward 6 encompasses all of the town east of Trafalgar Road and north of the QEW. Development, traffic congestion and the need for local jobs are among the main ward issues being touted by the seven newcomers. Del McIntee, 49, is an Oakvillebased insurance broker and financial advisor, who previously worked as an executive assistant to a Toronto city councillor. He says he is concerned about development and density in Ward 6, as the town grows north of Dundas Street. "I just fear highrises coming all around us at some point in time," said McIntee, a Nichols Drive resident who wants to increase public input into the process. "Given the amount of growth that's about to take place, I want to get the people Del McIntee Emmett Sullivan Max Khan Maria Robinson in the ward involved in planning it in the best way possible." He added that he will work to see neighbourhoods protected, parks maintained, recycling increased and transit improved. He is also promising to undertake door-to-door canvassing on town issues to find out what residents want. McIntee ran unsuccessfully as a candidate in Ward 5 in the 2003 election, but has since moved into Ward 6. Emmett Sullivan, 29, is an executive recruitment specialist who grew up in Oakville but currently lives on Robarts Road in Ward 5. He said he wants to see an increased town emphasis on economic development that will bring businesses into the community and make it easier for people to work locally. "I think it would alleviate a lot of our problems if we could get more jobs," he said. Sullivan added that he wants to see Oakville remain a leader in the GTA, and believes he can bring people together to deal with challenges. "I'm not coming in here with a single issue at hand. I want to take an even approach," he said. "I believe I have a unique insight into protecting Oakville for the future." Max Khan, 38, is a Torontobased lawyer who wants to see "loopholes" in Oakville's Official Plan eliminated, to ensure the town maintains control of its future. "I think development in Oakville should once again be in the hands of the citizens," said Khan, who lives on Pilgrim's Way in Ward 4. "We need to take back Oakville from the developers." He is also concerned about the town's financial relationship with the province and argues that Oakville property taxes are being "grossly misallocated," with money going to fund provincial services and subsidize developers. Khan said the town should cooperate with local environmental groups to preserve parkland and natural areas, and should enforce its bylaws. "We have a lot of bylaws and I think they're only as good as are enforced," said Khan, who notes that he is a member of the Liberal Party. Maria Robinson, 47, is vicepresident of a Burlington-based energy consulting company. She is also vice-chair of the Halton Housing Advisory Committee and past chair of the Oakville Public Library Board. The only woman in the sevenway race, Robinson also sat on the steering committee for the Halton Comprehensive Housing Strategy. The mother of two teenagers, Robinson said her focus is ensuring affordable housing is available for everyone in Oakville, including young adults.
