www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 27, 2006 - 39 Visit Mye Japanese, downtown Oakville When a mayor extends a personal invitation to set up shop in his part of the world, it's the sweet sound of opportunity knocking. It was for Motoaki Aoki back in 1986. That's when he met Harry Barrett at a reception held in Tokyo. Barrett was the mayor of Oakville between 1973 and 1985. He was in Aoki's neck of the woods visiting the town's twin city of Neyagawa, Japan. With this idea in mind, Aoki, his wife, and his children left all that was familiar to them. The couple's fourth child was born at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital the week before Mye Restaurant opened. "It wasn't easy to start a business out of nothing, in a new country...we had taken on a little too much," said Aoki, "but it was Harry's invitation that made it all worth it and we're happy we did." Mye Restaurant represented Oakville's first introduction to Japanese fare in 1987. After 19 years sales and staff have tripled and continue to rise. "Oakville has been good to us," said Aoki. "We're supported by a lot of good customers, like Barrett, who love Japanese food," he added. The 100-seat restaurant at Church and Navy streets has just been renovated and reveals a simple, elegant décor -- a tasteful backdrop to the authentic Japanese food served. The lunch and dinner menu boasts fresh and "unbeatable" Sushi and Sashimi created with fish purchased from a supplier who buys only the best fish and passes it on to the master chef. And from a seafood tempura of jumbo shrimp, scallop, salmon, crab, and seasonal white fish; to his Yakiniku dinner of sliced and then grilled USDA prime-grade rib eye steak, Aoki's menu appeals to a wide swath of diner's palates. With such a successful local history Aoki looks forward to making a big noise next year when Mye Restaurant celebrates 20 years in Oakville. TUSCAN FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL!
