42 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 27, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Salter sets pace at Trek or Treat Oakville's Gillian Salter was the fastest female runner in eight-kilometre competition at last weekend's Trek or Treat night trail race, held on Oakville Heritage Trails. One hundred and thirty-six people ran the eight-km race, with another 212 participating in the five-km run/walk. Approximately 75 children took part in the event, which, according to organizers, was Canada's firstever night trail run. Toronto's Pedrag Mladenovic of Toronto was the top overall finisher in the eight-km run. Baden resident Jason Erb won the five-km race, with Charlene Kroeze of Hamilton finishing first amongst the women. Gift cards for ECCO shoes were awarded to the winners of each age division, while second-place finishers received Leki Nordic walking poles. Many runners rented Petzl headlamps to illuminate the course, which began near Dundas and Fourth Line and wound its way southeast towards Upper Middle Rd. Heather Korol, who organized the race along with husband Mark Arnold, said they plan to make Trek or Treat an annual event. Oakville downed the Tillsonburg Tornadoes 4-1 in the final of the Dan Bell Memorial Tournament, avenging Tillsonburg's victory in the round-robin opener. The Rangers finished the tournament with a mark of 4-1, scoring 37 goals while yielding only five. Brandon Hughes was named the tournament's most valuable player. Other players on the team are James Bauer, Nicholas Caissie, Victor Christiansen, Ben Everett, Logan Gauer, Christian Hayes, Tyler Hipple, Brad Johnson, Troy LaCoste, Theo Lewis, Lukas Marek, Tim Molloy, Adam Power, Erik Ritterhaus, Will Santangeli and Zach Varao. Glen LaCoste, Dan Johnson, David Santangeli and John Varao coach the team. SECOND IN SCARBOROUGH: Winning all but its final game, the Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers junior girls' basketball team earned silver at a tournament in Scarborough last weekend. Ridge junior girls claim silver in Scarborough In their first tournament action of the season, the Iroquois Ridge junior girls' Trailblazers netted silver at a competition in Scarborough last weekend. Ridge was seeded 11th out of the 12 squads participating, but quickly served notice that it was a legitimate threat. The Trailblazers downed the tournament's top seed, St. Augustine Titans, 40-30 in their first game, then defeated West Hill 45-26 and Newtonbrook 54-11 to finish the round robin with a 3-0 mark. Iroquois Ridge met St. Augustine again in the semifinal, and again earned the win, this time by a 30-26 count. The Trailblazers' run came to an end, however, in the gold-medal game with a loss to Pope John Paul II. Grade 10 student Sarah Graham was named Ridge's most valuable player in the final and finished the weekend with 48 points. Leah Russell led the 'Blazers in scoring with 52 points overall, while Kara Ngo contributed 32, Kerri Keresteci had 22 and Kaitlyn Jarrett netted 15. Brittany Craig, Petrice Wright and Addie Matos also chipped in offensively, Alex Szatan provided strong defense, Nicole Mitchell was the club's emotional leader and injured player Rachel Over lent plenty of support from the bench.
