www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday October 28, 2006 - 11 Harper accuses opposition of stalling legislation Continued from page 7 "This is not what the House of Commons voted for. It's not what Canadians voted for." Once again, Harper called on the Liberals to "stop playing games, give Canadians the reforms they voted for and pass the federal accountability act, without amends." Harper said if the opposition doesn't agree, he expects it should "at least be upfront with Canadians." "If the opposition disagrees with us, they should do it in the open, not in some committee meeting, not in the unelected senate, not by endlessly stalling a democratic vote," he said. "Tell the people of Canada why you're opposing accountability, why you're opposing tough measures against crime and explain to Canadians why you didn't tell them this in the last election." Harper said the opposition is free to "force an election any time," but added there shouldn't be a need for an election "to pass the things that Canadians already voted for." Stephen Sparling, president of Oakville's Chamber of Commerce, applauded Harper and the Conservative government's work in "the fight against global terrorism." Sparling said Harper "has regained the respect and credibility for Canada at the G-8, within the commonwealth nations and with the francophones so that once again, Canada is punching above its waistline in world affairs." The Oakville Chamber of Commerce has invited Premier Dalton McGuinty and will also be inviting the official leader of the opposition for luncheons in the future.
