After all, the Red Devils have already eliminated one of the main contenders for an Ontario title. OT earned its berth in the upcoming Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament by defeating Burlington's Notre Dame Fightin' Irish 2-1 (20 in penalty flicks) in Thursday's Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference final, a contest played in Milton. Notre Dame has won four of the past five provincial titles and blanked the Red Devils 2-0 in Monday's Halton championship game. "The girls were really happy about it," said OT coach Jim Groen, whose team knocked off Hamilton's Bishop Ryan Wednesday to earn the right to challenge the Irish for an OFSAA spot. "It's nice to finally beat Notre Dame." The Irish has won the past five Halton championships, defeating OT each of those years. "It's hard to beat the same team three times in one season, and it's twice as hard to beat them (twice) in the same week," Notre Dame coach Mieke VanderKooy said. OT got off to a strong start Thursday, scoring four minutes into the game as Candice Hawksworth knocked the ball in after a scramble in front of the Notre Dame goal. It was the first goal the Irish had surrendered in nine games. Notre Dame rallied to tie the game early in the second half on a well-executed penalty corner. Katie Roganowicz banged in a loose ball after OT goalie Nyrie Israelian had stopped a shot by Kristen Altenhoff. OT controls play late The Red Devils carried the play down the stretch and through the 10-minute overtime session, but were unable to break through. That meant penalty flicks were required to determine a winner, with Jenna Bull and Fiona Clark converting for OT while Israelian stopped all the Notre Dame attempts. "It's too bad it had to go down to penalty strokes," said Groen, "but I guess the game can't go on forever." Though Notre Dame was the home team, the game was played at E.C. Drury High School because of the school's field hockey-only pitch. "It's 10 times better than Oakville Trafalgar's fields and there's no comparison to our fields," VanderKooy said. "It's the best field we've played on this year." The OFSAA field hockey championships will begin Thursday in Scarborough, concluding Saturday. -- With files from Kevin Nagel, Special to The Oakville Beaver LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER HEAD TO HEAD: Tara Campbell (left) of the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils jousts for positioning with Notre Dame's Katlyn Murdza during Thursday's Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference field hockey final in Milton.
