www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday October 28, 2006 - 7 Scaring up money for UNICEF Pud By Steve Nease snease@haltonsearch.com Continued from page 4 making games for cell phones. "We coerced her into letting us take over the entire house for Halloween." "Then we heard about Unicef," added Phelan, the company's director of operations. "I think a lot of people don't know Unicef's not doing the (fundraising) boxes this year, so we figured it would be a great way to raise funds for the cause." For the last three weeks, Dies and his team friends, family and co-workers have been transforming Phelan's home, both inside and out. "We did some remodeling for her, it's a little more open concept," laughed Dies. "We've had a lot of fun, bought a bunch of new props, we've done up the whole house." Dies and his family started turning their two-car garage into a haunted house a couple of years ago, which he said "was a big hit with everybody on our street," so he did have some supplies. But to fill Phelan's house, they had to go that extra mile. "You know the Halloween store you drive by on the QEW and wonder who buys from there?" said Phelan. "Dave Dies does. I mean, yesterday he went to Stratford to get a prop. He's going all out." Black lights, fog machines and an "eerie experience with ambient sound effects" will be throughout the house, says Dies. "Lots of things drop in from the ceiling, pop out of walls, pop out of barrels. We have a really cool transformation chamber where one of the grim reapers transforms a live person into a skeleton." Rooms taken over by spiders, people caught in webs, a kitchen over-run by rats that's just part of the display. "He's literally used the whole house," said Phelan, a mother of two. "He's got a dungeon and crypts and spider rooms and glass floors and heads and things that go boo in the dark. He spent a small fortune on this. It's his favourite day of the year, always has been." It will take about eight people to run all of the props, including Dies' wife, son and colleagues. The last room, Dies says, might be the best. "It's where the master soul taker resides," he said. "I don't want to give it away, but it's quite an experience." Dies doesn't recommend that "really small kids" go through the house, but says they can go through with a parent. "We shout out a scale before they start so people know how scary to be," he said. "For smaller kids, we'll give them a one to make it a little less scary so we don't traumatize them. But for the old people, when they ask for a one, we'll give them a 12." The haunted house is at 473 Bedford Rd., east of Maple Road off Duncan. It's open to the public tomorrow, Oct. 29 and Halloween night starting at 6 p.m. They'll be accepting donations for "Lots of things drop in from the ceiling, pop out of walls, pop out of barrels. We have a really cool transformation chanber where one of the grim reapers transforms a live person into a skeleton."
