The candidates' responses to these questions have ben printed in the Friday edition of the Oakville Beaver. This week, the candidates were asked: Why should you be elected Halton Region chair? Brian Burton Halton Region is facing many complex issues all involving growth and its impact on our quality of life and the tax ramifications. Two that have recently emerged are the Region's proposal to take on the Golden Horseshoe's garbage problem and to supply new headquarters for both school Brian Burton boards. My background is as a business executive and professional engineer. I've built office buildings, power plants and factories. I've been CEO of a 3,300 employee enterprise. I know the difficulties and risks the Region is taking on in building the largest garbage incinerator in North America and a $127 million regional hall. I have seen through all the poor rationales in reports pushing the merits of expanding the Region into such unnecessary ventures. I represent a clear choice. I will bring transparency to municipal politics. I will not dress up a 7 per cent tax increase as only 2.5 per cent because the police budget and the assessment increases are not included. I will get the total tax increase back to 3 per cent. There will be no new grandiose offices for the regional chair. There will be no increase in air pollution caused by 240 garbage trucks per day heading to a garbage incinerator in south Milton. I will protect our neighbourhoods and green spaces and the Region's finances. You can vote to continue down the path of sprawling development and burgeoning debt or you can vote for a course correction with Brian Burton: the businessman/engineer with the green disposition. Gary Carr I served as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Oakville for 13 years. I was elected to that position three consecutive times. During that period I spent four years as the Speaker of the Ontario Legislature. I won the election of Speaker by gaining the respect and confidence of MPPs from all political par- Gary Carr ties. In addition, I served as the Member of Parliament for Halton during which I served constituents of the Halton Region. My website at www.garycarr.ca has more information on my record. During that period I have had a history of standing up for my constituents. On issues like the downloading and pooling of services I voted with my constituents and stood up against the policies, which were not good for our region. I have fought to get the funding to get the new Ford flex plant and keep the jobs for the employees as well as the 25,000 spin off jobs in Halton. I fought for the gas tax money which meant millions of dollars for Halton to provide for services that we need. I have fought for the hospital and school funding to make sure our region had the services for our residents. I have also fought for numerous special projects that have come to Halton. I was able to get results because I was respected as someone that was a strong voice for his constituents. I will continue to be a strong voice for the people of Halton as regional chair. It was the right decision. I have lived and worked in Halton all my life. I've worked 36 years building partnerships throughout Halton. I share a common vision and passion for Brent Marshal Halton's quality of life with Halton residents. The next few years will be critical and Halton needs a regional chair with the abilities to protect Halton's interests. I have worked side by side with Joyce Savoline and Halton political and community leaders. I understand the challenges facing Halton. I have the required knowledge, experience and skills to protect Halton's interests. I have a proven track record of visionary leadership and delivering results. My strong political acumen has led to a trusting alliance with federal, provincial, municipal and community leaders and I have earned their respect and confidence. Halton did not acquire its unique made-in-Halton quality of life by accident. Halton's mix of town and countryside, protected natural areas, distinct local communities and strong fiscal position was achieved through the strength of Halton's leaders. As chair, I will use my strengths and knowledge, acquired in 36 years as a Halton employee, to protect our quality of life and build on our successes. I love this community. I am proud of the part I have played in our successes and I look forward to being a part of future successes. For these reasons, I should be elected regional chair. embur ECONOBOX4 NEW SYSTEMS! I will listen to the needs of my constituents. 3) I am able to work with a diverse set of people, no matter what their backgrounds -- I can be either a team player or think out of the box as required.
