www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 3, 2006 - 17 The Red Cross helps community members in many ways L inda Westbrook never thought she'd need hip surgery. She had never had any serious problems with her joints, so when she found out she needed a hip replaced, she was quite surprised, and had a difficult time anticipating how the surgery would impact her life. Westbrook turned to the Canadian Red Cross Society, Oakville Branch, for help. The Red Cross provides shortterm loans of home healthcare equipment, programs for seniors, disaster services, transportation services, first aid/CPR, babysitting courses, water safety, and youth and international services. In Westbrook's case, they loaned her equipment that she could use right after her surgery, and equipment for her long-term rehabilitation. "I was really grateful to the Red Cross because I had the surgery in Montreal," said Westbrook. "It was a costly trip, and I think [having to undergo] the operation would have been made worse if the friendly and knowledgeable people at the Red Cross didn't help me out by loaning me the equipment I needed to get around." Nancy Featherstone, community services assistant at the Oakville Branch, said the Canadian Red Cross Society is known primarily for helping sen- iors who are in need of home care, but they do so much in addition to that. "We also help people with disabilities and offer many first aid and health courses to the general public or to those dealing with a family member who needs care," she said, "not to mention the work the Canadian Red Cross Society does for disaster relief both here in Canada and internationally." The Canadian Red Cross Society, Oakville Branch, is funded by individual donors, local and national fundraising initiatives, and United Way of Oakville. This year, United Way of Oakville's Community Impact Fund goal is $2.25 million.
