That's why he said he didn't include any of the business and community involvement he's had under his Muslim name, Jaafer Syed, in his campaign literature. However, the 34-yearold Glen Abbey financial advisor is now at the centre of what he calls a "smear campaign" as information about his Muslim conversion in 1992, his adoption of a Muslim name in 1994 and his business and community involvement in the local Muslim community is being highlighted in the media. An article on the fact that Gareau also goes by the Muslim name adopted from his father-in-law when doing business in Muslim circles appeared earlier this week in The Globe and Mail. "I've been Jeff Gareau, legally, since birth, 34 years ago. Candidates squabble over role of mayor By Melannie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Voters should demand that their next mayor be prepared to schmooze with other levels of government and policy-making organizations, says the current mayor, Ann Mulvale. "It's a critical part of the job," said Mulvale in response to the question posed at an all-candidates meeting hosted by Fair Vote Canada and Oakville Green Wednesday night. More than 300 voters milled about the Galaxy 707 Club to speak with all of the candidates in the mayoral, regional chair, trustee and ward races. "If your next mayor isn't represented at these tables, others will be and guess whose priorities will get attention?" asked Mulvale.
