4- The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 3, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Mayor accuses challengers of oversimplification Continued from page 1 Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) and disagreed with the value of such mingling. "We have to change the way we ask and stop diluting our powers with other municipalities," he said. Rob Burton joined in the criticism of Mulvale's role with AMO. "It's been too much AMO and not quite enough Oakville. A mayor should work through the existing MP and MPP to avoid a duplication of efforts," said Burton. Growth also dominated the portion of the evening dedicated to the mayor's debate. Burton wants a line-by-line analysis Halton Regional Chair Election day is fast approaching. With the critical issues facing Halton for the next four years, it is more important than ever to vote on Monday, November 13th. A vote for Brent Marshall is a vote for Real Regional Experience. Brent brings to the job of Chairman a wealth of knowledge and experience. He knows where Halton has been, what it has taken to get here and what it will take in the future to maintain our current enviable lifestyle. "My vision for Halton is a community that is a mix of town and countryside where residents can live, work and play; a healthy Region in every way with distinct local communities surrounded by rural and natural landscapes with abundant recreational areas protected for future generations." Leah Chutko, Brent Marshall and Joyce Savoline, outgoing Regional Chair www.brentmarshall.ca 1-866-628-6499 · 1-519-853-1008 of every item in the annual budget and told the crowd that the incumbents at the table with him all chose to participate in the town's "reckless growth." With six years tallied at Town Hall Janice Wright said she can "guarantee" there is money wasted. But she said the best way to bring down taxes is to change the current local ratio of 82 per cent residential lands brought down to 60 per cent and the mere 18 per cent of employment lands boosted to 40 per cent. With one term under his belt, Stoate said the head count should be greater at the service level than at the administration level. "I would rather spend more money on planners than on lawyers," he added. "Let's not oversimplify this," retorted Mulvale. "It's hard to make a planner a firefighter when the Province mandates the numbers of firefighters according to population." She wants to eliminate sending $19 million in pooling funds that Oakville taxpayers direct to cover Toronto's social services budget. Saving taxpayers money also dominated the debate among the four candidates vying to win the title of Halton Region's chair. Former Halton MP and MPP Gary Carr promised to use his contacts at Queen's Park and in Ottawa to aggressively reap the region's share of gas tax collected by the federal government and shift funding responsibilities that were downloaded on municipalities by past provincial governments. Brian Burton said the Region should cancel its plans to build the $127-million addition on its headquarters, and the proposed $700 million energy-fromwaste facility. But Brent Marshall disagrees. "Don't be misled by half truths," he said. Halton has had lower than inflationary tax increases over the past nine years in a row. And he defended the expansion of regional headquarters on the grounds that, in his view, it will eliminate duplication by housing more local services, such as police and school boards under one roof.
