www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 3, 2006 - 5 Arson charge laid By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF An Oakville man is accused of purposely setting fire to a White Oaks Boulevard home in which he was living. The fire at 1428 White Oaks Blvd. on Monday has left seven tenants homeless, including the man accused of starting it. Police estimate the total damage at $200,000. Charged with arson is Bradley Fevreau, 52, who lived in the back room of the home where the fire started, said Sgt. Peter Payne of the Halton Regional Police public affairs unit. Police are still investigating the crime scene, which means the home's tenants, including four Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning students, haven't been allowed in to see what damage has been done. "Basically as it stands, our house was set on fire and we have no idea what's going on and we're all sort of staying with friends and waiting to see how bad it is," said Rob McLeod, who has been a tenant in the home for almost a year. McLeod lives in the room above the suspect, but wasn't home when the fire started. Only one other tenant and the suspect were home when the fire began, and neither was injured. McLeod heard the news the next day from the landlord, who also lives in the home. "The fire could have killed anybody in the house," he said. "It was very severe." The suspect, McLeod said, came from The Lighthouse, a homeless shelter in town run by the Salvation Army. "He was working and he had a normal job. We thought we'd give him a chance and we let him live in the house. He seemed like he had a drinking problem, but he seemed like a nice enough guy so we were patient with him," he said. Before police determined it was a crime scene, the landlord was able to quickly go through the home to assess the damage. "He said the gentleman's room was completely destroyed," said McLeod. "We assume most of the fire damage is on the main level, but there's probably heat and smoke damage throughout the house." Bedding, clothes, TVs, computers, supplies for school and more, McLeod said, are likely destroyed. "Even if it's just smoke damage, that's going to be totaled." Assistant chief fire prevention officer Will Crognale says the damage is "heavy throughout the house." "Most of the structural damage is on the first floor, where the fire originated. The rest of the house has heavy, heavy smoke damage as well as water damage." WILL PURSELL / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER UP IN SMOKE: A White Oaks Boulevard house was damaged in a Monday blaze.
