22 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 4, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Cool clothes for half-pint hipsters Oh sure there's plenty of guidance in those baby preparedness books about how to care for newborns. They're rife with how-to tips about getting baby to latch, sleep and learn. But where is the expert info about how to nurture a newborn's inner cool, to ensure that their innate, hip happenin' genetics rise to the surface? For these beings that can merely coo, spit up and speak gibberish, it's what's outside that truly counts on the cool meter. (They can learn not to judge a book by its cover later.) Thankfully, Oakville has its own baby fashion guru in Joanne Wright. Her newly opened store, called JetBaby, is a Mecca for the `with-it' newborn to size six set. As a former wardrobe stylist in the commercial photography industry, Wright has an eye for scouting out clever, one-of-akind clothing lines that evoke admiring, even envious compliments. The rule at JetBaby is cool trumps cutesy. "These clothes are so cool, customers ask if they come in adult sizes," said Wright. She has scoured the U.S. for JetBaby's exclusive clothing lines including, Appaman, Knuckleheads, Tea Collection, Ramonster, City Threads Le Fromage et L'Orange, Baby Legs legwarmers, Sand Cassel Hats and John Deere clothing, books, toys and accessories. There's nothing like JetBaby, even in Toronto's trendy Queen West. Wright's own two boys were her first canvases for creating cool kids. The biggest hit so far has been the huge range of t-shirts and onesies that pay homage to the rock and rollers of mom and dad's day. By emblazoning the familiar logos of the Rolling Stones, Metallica, AC/DC, The Ramones, The Clash, Johnny Cash and Bob Marley across a babe's chest, musical taste is sure to be instilled. Wright also carries vintage washed shirts with `70s and `80s advertising screens and allergy aware t-shirts, stickers and patches that say `No Peanuts', `No Tree Nuts', `Gluten-free', `Egg Free' and `Dairy Free'. JetBaby also has a selection of must-have books for the bedrooms of all city crawlers including the tongue-in-cheek tale entitled Urban Babies Wear Black or the rhythmic prose of My First Book of Sushi. For the current take on classic tunes, Wright carries the Rockabye Baby Lullaby CDs, which transform the classic rock songs of Radiohead, Led Zepellin, Coldplay and others into soothing instrumental sleepy-time mod musak. Also exclusive to JetBaby is The Davey Bag, a must-have winter stroller cover designed by Toronto's Baby Ben. Harajuku Lovers, a line for girls created by singer Gwen Stefani of the band No Doubt, plus baby and kid-sized skateboard shoe Vans is coming soon to JetBaby. Wright is also in the process of expanding her line of JetBaby clothing and will soon add online (www.jetbaby.com) and phone order shopping to her 77 Lakeshore Rd. W. (entrance on Kerr St.), empire.
