Former President Medical Staff Assoc.,- Trillium Health Centre Chief of Staff Plastic Surgery, - Trillium Health Centre Q: A: I've just been diagnosed with Diabetes. My doctor tells me I should be very concerned about my feet, why? Diabetes affects over 1.4 million Canadians today. Your doctor's concerns about your feet stem from the long term complications that could occur over time. These complications could include irreversible nerve damage, a decrease in blood flow to your feet and a decreased ability to fight infection. All this can be avoided with the proper management of diabetes, including the regular monitoring of blood sugar levels and ongoing preventative care of your feet. Simple changes to your lifestyle now can save your feet. The best treatment plan for anyone with Diabetes is to visit your Chiropodist for a Diabetic Screening. This screening includes: A Foot Assessment, Education on the Effects of Diabetes on the Feet, Preventative Care Advice and a Footwear Assessment. To book your Diabetic Screening Appointment call Q: A: I've heard that you can have Liposuction without general anaesthetic; is it just as effective? The Basement Space.com would be more than happy to assist you in planning your basement renovation. Please contact Ashley Trapman at 905-338-6179 Liposuction without g p general anaesthetic is called Tumescent. It is a relatively new technique and increasingly popular with q excellent results. The p plastic surgeon injects large volumes of fluid g j g which contain anaesthetic, removing localized g deposits of fat to reshape one or more areas of your p body. This is done through very small incisions and the g biggest advantage of this technique is that it allows gg g q you to undergo this p g procedure while you are awake! This makes it much safer and allows patients to be back at work within 1-2 days. Liposuction for both men and women is becoming p the most requested cosmetic enhancement. 905-845-2291 Before having any cosmetic procedure you should consult with a Plastic Surgeon or a Dermatologist OAKVILLE NORTHWEST 1500 Upper Middle Rd.W. & 3rd Line (Sobey's Plaza) 905-469-4532 OAKVILLE EAST 380 Dundas St. E., Trafalgar Rd. Q: Q: A: Well it is that time of year again, and cold and flu season is upon us. These known and unknown "bugs" can be relentless and everyone can be at risk. So, what are we going to do about it this year? First thing you always want to do is make sure your diet is full of whole natural foods which will provide immune support and antioxidant protection. Eliminate foods that are high in refined sugars and sodium that can lower the immune system. 1 tbsp. of refined sugar has been known to lower the immune system for 3 hours! A can of pop has 4 tbsp. of refined sugar!! Supplementation of herbals as well as vitamins and minerals will also do a lot to help build and boost the immune system. Phyto Shield and Defense Plex are Herbal combinations we carry that have Echinacea, Golden Seal, Astragalus and Garlic to name a few. We also suggest taking an Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) like our MAX EFA to keep the immune system strong. Prevention is the key! Don't let the flu catch you this season!! Q: A: How can I p prevent a Cold and Flu this season? A: This is a very common complaint of denture patients in general and there are some options that may be helpful to you. Of course you could use a denture adhesive from a drug store, but this is a messy, temporary method that has to be replaced every day. A permanent reline is the most traditional way to tighten a full denture. Extra plastic is added to the denture to fill the space between the denture and your gums. This works better for upper dentures because there is more for the denture to sit on - the hard palate. Lower dentures have much less to sit on and the bone on the lowers tend to shrink away quickly over time, leaving in many cases, not enough for a denture to sit on at all. Today the most effective way would be with dental implants. The simplest method would be two small implants placed so that a denture can snap in place. If your denture is fairly new and well made, we can often retrofit your existing denture to the implants too! Adding more implants can allow us to make a denture that not only stays in place, but feels solid when chewing like natural teeth. Implants have made eating enjoyable again for our denture patients. Great things start with a warm healthy smile. Dear Doctor: I enjoy running for my daily exercise but over the course of the last few weeks I have developed shin splints. I have taken an anti-inflammatory which has reduced the pain but it continues to be bothersome. What else can I do to relieve the pain? Help please!! Dear Patient: Shin splints cause pain and sometimes swelling in the front part of the lower leg (hence the name). Shin splints are caused by repeated pounding on hard surfaces during athletic activities such as running, basketball or tennis. Home treatment includes decreasing pounding activities for a couple of weeks up to a couple of months depending upon the severity. You may want to substitute other forms of exercise, in the short term, to avoid the pounding, and then slowly increase running activities over a period of time. Low-impact activities such as bicycling and swimming can be safe substitutes and won't stress the shin in the same way as the repeated pounding. The use of ice packs, warm soaks, and a protective wrap to the shin might help. Another common cause of shin splints and one which is often overlooked is improper foot biomechanics which may require orthotics (custom inserts for your shoes and sneakers) to correct. Ongoing shin pain can mean a stress fracture and may necessitate a thorough evaluation by your doctor. Your health is important to us!! p complimentary consultation.
