www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 11, 2006 - 9 Suds polls sliding around Continued from page 8 as mayor. Trafalgar started brewing True Burton Ale in 2003 and it was a popular beer, but narrowly missed out on becoming the number one, just as Burton lost the last mayoral race by a handful of votes. The Wright Stuff has been in Oakville many years, referring to Wright's long-time involvement with municipal politics, and is ready to step up. So too is Stoate's Grand Lager, advertised as "getting down to business," referring to Stoate's reputation as a businessman. Trafalgar Brewery is also holding Vote with Your Throat elections in London and Toronto the incumbents are leading the way in both but what's unique about Oakville's race is the way the numbers have changed since the beer election started last month, Arnold says. The Wright Stuff was leading early on, but things changed. "I thought the numbers would be fairly consistent. There were no big issues coming down the pipe that would change the vote," said Arnold. "In Oakville, it started off favouring The Wright stuff and slowly and slowly it started favouring Mulv-Ale." Beer drinkers have recently widened the gap. Just last week, Mulv-Ale was leading by just one per cent, and now has a more comfortable six per cent lead. The beer polls close the same time `real' polls close Monday night. "There have been rumours of some candidates buying some of the beers to influence the votes. I don't have a problem with that," said Arnold, laughing. Some of the proceeds will go to the Oakville Public Library's charitable fund as part of the LCBO's recently-launched Discover our Community Initiative. The beers are available at the local brewery, 1156 Speers Rd., and at LCBO stores in Oakville, where results and voting trends are posted. -- Krissie Rutherford can be reached at krutherford@oakvillebeaver.com.
