26 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 11, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Fencing Academy team finishes fourth A Canadian Fencing Academy of Oakville women's foil team enjoyed success at last weekend's RMC Team Fencing Invitational in Kingston, placing fourth out of 24 squads in its division. Leah Fidanza, Katya Belinka and Alison Spencer reached the medal round before dropping a close match to the eventual championship-winning team from Montreal. The invitational tournament featured 165 teams from across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. In other competition, three members of the local fencing club won medals at a recent Youth Foil Circuit tournament in Hamilton. Paul Baczynski won silver and Robert Chung claimed bronze in the under-11 division, while Bernadette Gomes earned bronze in the under-15 division. Other local competitors at the event included Nicole Markwich (fifth, U17), Zachary Spencer (sixth, U15), Greg Bunner (sixth, U11), Kelvin Bunner (11th, U13), Maddison Osborne (12th, U13), Nicholas Stancel (13th, U11), Calvin Buschlen (13th, U13) and Eryn Dickison (17th, U13). Atom Hornets reach final at Clarington tournament The first-ever Oakville Hornets atom C girls' hockey team is quickly making its presence felt. The Hornets were finalists in their first tournament and went undefeated in their opening five games. Oakville began the recent tournament in Clarington with a loss to the Woolwich Wild but then reeled off victories over Peterborough, Whitby and Kanata to earn a berth in the final. Woolwich once again got the better of the Hornets in the championship game, forcing Oakville to settle for silver. In league play, the Hornets beat Clarington 6-0, Willowdale 1-0, Markham Stouffville 9-1, North York 5-0 and Leaside 5-1. Cassidy McPherson had the game-winner versus Willowdale as Tegan Duncan earned the shutout, while Emily Schnarr recorded a hat trick against Markham Stouffville.
