"The Prince of Wales was indeed very concerned to hear about the threat to one of the few remaining oak trees in Oakville, Ontario, and has asked me to pass on to you and the Oakville residents his warmest best wishes and every encouragement for your fundraising efforts to save this venerable tree," wrote The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall via their Deputy Private Secretary Clive Alderton in an Oct. 19 letter to Toronto resident Janet Apor. Apor is on the Woodlands Oak Tree Preservation Committee, a citizen-led group working to save the more than 250-year-old oak tree that sits in front of the Halton Regional Centre on Bronte Road just north of the QEW. The $42 million Bronte Road expansion project is soon set to begin construction in front of the regional centre -- and is slated to take down the tree. However, regional council has granted a reprieve of sorts, that if the committee can raise the $343,000 extra that's needed to build the road around the tree rather than through where it stands, by Dec. 15, the tree will be saved and the road will go around it. The committee has just about every iron in the fire possible to save the tree -- even the backing of Prince Charles. "British people are very, very much in favour of preserving their historic trees," said committee co-chair Jim Young. SABRINA BYRNES / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER MEET MARSHALL CLAUS: Mrs. Claus is coming to Oakville tomorrow to serve as the Grand Marshall in the 58th annual Oakville Santa Claus Parade. Her husband, Santa Claus, is also coming to town and will bring up the rear of the parade. The fun starts at 9 a.m. at Lakeshore Road and Reynolds Street. For more parade information see page 25. Maverick Halton MP Garth Turner won't be feeling blue anymore after the national party council moved to disallow him from running again as a candidate for the Halton Conservative riding association. It's the second time in less than a month the rogue and outspoken MP has been rebuked by the Conservatives. Last month the Conservative government turfed Turner from the party for allegedly breaking caucus confidentiality through postings on his website. The Turner turmoil is also causing a bit of strife in the local association. Turner, now an independent, said he was told of the blocking through a letter he received last Friday (Nov. 10), to his surprise. He said he's perturbed at being notified this way, for not being given an explanation and that national party officials have made the deci Halton MP Garth Turner Inside Sports.......................................31 Worship....................................37 Real Estate...............................38 Classified .................................42 Full Delivery: Canadian Tire, Food Basics, Superstore, Telus, Wal-Mart, Zellers Partial Delivery: Sport Mart, Pharmassist, The Bay, Linens-N-Things, The Brick, Millennium 3000, Home Accent, Oaktown Dental, Longo's, Price Chopper, Food Basics, Cadau Special, Ho Lee Chow, M&M's, Mark's Work Warehouse, Sobeys, Pharma Plus, Fortino's, Kitchen Stuff Plus, Goemans, Solutions, Best Buy, Ridgeway Furnishings, Super Pet,Oakville Honda, The Barn, Zellers, Dominion, Toys R Us, Rogers Plus, The Source, Michaels, DOT Patio, Shoppers Drug Mart, Future Shop SYLC (Support Your Local Carrier) DELIVERY For home delivery & customer service call 905-845-9742 Mon., Tues., & Thurs. 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., Wed. & Fri. 8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. or Saturday 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. For new subscriptions, call 905-845-9742 or subscribe online @ www.oakvillebeaver.com See Benefit page 2 See Halton page 3 Quality Flooring starts at Concept Flooring Oakville's largest selection of Natural Limestone and Hardwood 35 Years of Experience in Tile Installation
