22 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 18, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Campaign aims to ensure a bright Christmas for every child By Sabrina Byrnes SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The Halton Regional Police Service, The Salvation Army and Canadian Tire have collaborated once again to help the more than 300 less fortunate families in need this holiday season. The Halton Police Toys for Tots program, which is in its seventh year running, officially starts today (Saturday) at the eight participating Canadian Tires in the region. A donation bin is set up in each of the stores. Customers are encouraged to donate their Canadian Tire money, which will be used to purchase toys to give to The Salvation Army. Halton Honda in Burlington has donated a vehicle for the use of deliveries. Det. Const. Chantal Verrier from the Halton Regional Police Service and chairperson for Toys for Tots said people are unaware of how many families are in need in our region. "In a region like Halton a lot of people don't realize how many families are in need of some extra help, and we realize this through this program, because it helps over 300 BARRIE ERSKINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER TOYS FOR TOTS TEAM : Representatives from the Halton Regional Police, Salvation Army and Canadian Tire teamed up to kick off this year's Toys for Tots campaign at the Kerr Street Canadian Tire store. families a year," said Verrier. meet that, if not exceed our goal." ilies that are under-privileged and "Last year we helped out over Halton Regional Police Chief are in need of help. 300 families, throughout the Gary Crowell thinks it is important "At this time of year, I think that region. Hopefully this year we can to acknowledge that there are fam- it's a time of giving," said Crowell. "There are people who are less fortunate and do not have an opportunity to celebrate in a way that people who have more (do). I just think that it's important to acknowledge that there are people less fortunate, and we try to do what we can just to make sure that they have a happy holiday," stated the Chief. Verrier claimed that teenagers are also their focus because they don't get recognized when people donate items. More often people will donate with smaller children in mind. The Salvation Army helps in identifying those that are in need. They've also set up their building in a way that families can look through the items. "What we've done is we've set up a toy shop so that people can come in and look around and be able to pick the toys of their choice, which will be very helpful for the moms," said Capt. Stan Higdon of the Salvation Army in Oakville. The eight participating Canadian Tires include three in Oakville, three in Burlington, one in Milton as well as one in Georgetown.
