26 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 18, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Rigatoni for Research Dinner, auction raises $250,000 The Hospital for Sick Children's brain tumour research department received a $250,000 donation thanks to the Rigatoni for Research Dinner and Silent Auction held Nov. 8 at Oakville's le Dome and banquet centre. The fundraiser, now in its ninth year, is run by active b.r.a.i.n.child volunteers Kathy and Danny Douthart, who lost their son, Christopher, to a brain tumour in 1997. Rigatoni for Research is one of the Hospital for Sick Children's biggest third party fundraising events, and its Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre has received more than $1.25 million from the fundraiser over the past nine years. Monies raised have been allocated towards innovative research proposals/studies and to purchase vital equipment for researchers at the BTRC. These efforts have empowered doctors and researchers in their quest to find a cure for brain tumour disease. More than 100 new cases of brain tumours are diagnosed at The Hospital for Sick Children every year -- a statistic that's rising annually at a rate of 20 per cent. In children, brain tumours are the most common malignancy after leukemia, and are the most common solid tumour. That's why the Douthart family and the rest of the Rigatoni for Research Committee continue to organize the event on an annual basis. motherhood inspiring greatness Pregnancy and mom fitness, yoga, personal training, birth services and more. The dinner was also a big success, selling out all 500 tickets. At the end of the night, the Rigatoni for Research Committee was proud to present a cheque for $250,000 to the Arthur & Sonia Labatt Research Centre. Every year, countless ripples flow from this event. The actions of individuals and companies, who have taken up the cause themselves, exemplify what it takes to be one of Christopher's Ripples.
