www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 8, 2006 - 11 Census fraud in healthcare field Halton police are warning the public, especially those working in the health care field, of a fraud scheme. Since Nov. 27, the Halton Regional Police Service has had two complaints from local practitioners in the health care field. Both complainants received letters from what appeared to be Statistics Canada. The letters outlined a census that was currently underway concerning the health care industry in Ontario and how it compares to other similar industries across North America. According to police, accompanying each letter was a $2,500 cheque, which was payment for participation in the census. Instructions attached to the cheques requested the cheque only be deposited by automated teller/bank machine and that it was not to be cashed. Police said the instructions also requested that funds in various denominations be placed in envelopes and be packaged and sent to a Toronto mailing address by a courier company. Police have confirmed with Statistics Canada there is no such census taking place and these letters and cheques are a fraudulent attempt to solicit funds from people working in the healthcare field. Statistics Canada's website contains the following notice: "A number of individuals in the health and medical field in Ontario have been solicited by mail to participate in a Statistics Canada survey. They are informed that Statistics Canada will pay them $2,500 for doing so. "Please note that this solicitation does not come from Statistics Canada. It is not legitimate and individuals should not participate. The persons responsible for the letter are not Statistics Canada employees. Statistics Canada has asked the RCMP to conduct an investigation into this situation which represents both impersonation of Statistics Canada employees and fraud." Halton police are investigating the incident. Anyone with information related to the matter is asked to contact the Milton Criminal Investigation Unit at 905-825-4777 or 905- 6341831, ext. 2419 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
