www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 13, 2006 - 35 Belly dancing boosts self-esteem Continued from page 33 "In our culture it got a stereotype that it was just a very sexual, suggestive dance that women did for men." That's just one of the myths Joharah hopes to expel by bringing the dance to Bronte. "A lot of people think belly dancing is just standing in one spot, gyrating and shaking," she said. "Not even close. There's a lot of movement. We'll be using the whole studio." After years of ballet, jazz and other dance, Joharah got into belly dancing more than a decade ago when a friend took her to a class. A former advertising executive from Toronto, that's all it took to get her hooked. "That's what often happens to people. They go to one class and they just get bitten by the bug," she said. "That's what happened to me." Joharah, who performs at functions and is part of a Toronto belly dancing troupe, was not only attracted to the `glitz and glam' that comes with the costumes and performances, but also the unique movements. "What got me was the femininity, the elegance," she said. "There's just so much fluidity and smoothness to the moves." Joharah began studying belly dance in Toronto and in the United States, and four years into her studies, took up teaching. "I think when you're passionate about something you like, you have to share your love of it with others," she said. Which is just one of the reasons she decided to bring BellyUp BellyDance to Oakville. "My vision for this place," she said, while sitting in the studio beneath photographs of her dancing in a `blingy' costume, "is that I didn't want bland and boring. I wanted a place where women could come and just feel beautiful. Get away from the kids and husband for an hour and just feel beautiful doing this dance form. "I hear a lot of, `I'm too heavy, I can't dance,'" she added. "This is a dance for women with curves and a body. There's no size requirement, there's no age requirement." It's a full body workout that's low to medium impact and sculpts the muscles, she said. "It can give you the confidence and motivate you to shed some pounds, or maybe it will just make you happy with who you are," said Joharah. "It can really improve self esteem." The studio offers a variety of classes from beginner to advanced levels, and Joharah is hoping to have 15-20 dancers in each class, "big enough to have fun," she says, "and small enough so they get individual attention." "It's really fun, it's really lively, they'll get a good workout." To find out more about BellyUp BellyDance, 2464 Lakeshore Rd. W., Unit 1, visit www.bellyup.ca.
