Kyle Enright (twice) and Thomas Aquinas Raiders senior boys' basketball team won all three of its games at last weekend's E.C. Drury Invitational in Milton, claiming the title. Aquinas defeated Christ the King 7017, Burlington Central 60-49 and St. Jon Silver were the Raiders' top scorers in the tournament. In recent regular-season play, the Raiders edged Oakville Trafalgar 40-37. Silver had 21 for Aquinas with D.J. Miller netting 14 for the Red Devils. Halton all-stars to play in final St. Thomas Aquinas' Alana Wood helped propel the Halton high school girls' basketball all-stars into today's final of the Hamilton Spectator All-Star Classic. Wood had 11 points, second only to Nelson's Alaina Porter's 15, as the Halton all-stars defeated the Hamilton Wentworth Public all-stars 74-50 Monday at Cathedral High School in Hamilton. "If everyone brings what we did to this game, we should have a good chance," Wood said of the 10th annual girls basketball showcase's championship game, which will pit Halton against the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic all-stars. Halton looked like it was in for a tough night Monday. Midway through the first half, Halton couldn't buy a basket. At one point, despite good shots, the ball seemed to defy gravity and just would not drop. That allowed Hamilton Wentworth to build an early 15-10 lead. "We were outrebounding them, getting good second and third chances, and making nice passes," said Halton coach Corey Trodd, a teacher at Nelson. "We were doing everything right but putting it in." Halton kept itself in the game with good pressure to create turnovers and when the shots finally started to fall, it went on a 17-5 run over the final four minutes of the half to take a 37-29 advantage into the half. Though the Halton squad featured players from six different high school teams, Trodd said it wasn't difficult getting everyone on the same page despite limited time to prepare. "We just gave them the basic structure of an offence and let the athletes take over from there." It certainly worked as Halton carried the up-tempo game it employed at the end of the first half into the second half. A couple of quick threepointers got Hamilton Wentworth back within six, but Halton answered with an 18-6 run. Halton also had plenty of opportunities from the free-throw line, going 30-for-44 (68 per cent). "It means a lot to represent Halton," Wood said. "It's been awesome. I was honoured and flattered that they asked me to be on the team. It's a great group of girls and when you have a group like this everyone can really show what they are capable of."
