www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 13, 2006 - 5 Kettle Campaign needs volunteers Continued from page 1 The Kettle Campaign, which kicked off Nov. 17 during the Downtown BIA Treelighting ceremony, is The Salvation Army's largest fundraising campaign. "This money is so important because it's our largest fundraising effort of the year and it goes to support our programs for the entire year," said King. The funding from the Kettle Campaign goes to support the Community and Family Services program, which helps run the Food Bank, provide clothing vouchers to those in need, and provide assistance on a case-by-case basis. Last year the Kettle Campaign raised more than $106,000 and this year the goal had been increased to $110,000 because the needs of the community are higher. "It is a frightening thought to think that we only have two weeks left and that we have to make that much money," said King. At this time last year, the funds were only up $2,600 from the current level, but enough money was raised for them to reach their goal with the help of the community. SABRINA BYRNES/ OAKVILLE BEAVER SIGN UP: The Oakville Salvation Army needs more volunteers like Ev Saldanha, above, to staff their kettles. "Last year, in the end, the community came through and the volunteers came through to support us and we managed to reach our goal and we did really well," said King. However, King worries about what will happen in the year ahead if the goal isn't reached. "It's a really hard decision to think what things you might have to pull away from and where you can pull from," said King. "Because if there's no money to run the programs, we simply can't have the programs and the services that we have. Our office runs here five days a week, our food bank operates five days a week, and the food bank is something that we have such a high demand for so I wouldn't want to think that we' d have to take a day away from that, or to not give as much to the community as the community needs," King said. The Salvation Army is in need of volunteers to run their kettles and is looking to the community for donations so they can aid those in need over the course of the year. On Saturday, Dec. 23, Mayor Rob Burton will be manning one of the kettles at the LCBO located at Lakeshore Road and Trafalgar Road from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. Those who are interested in volunteering can do so by contacting Kathy Macdonald, Kettle Coordinator at The Salvation Army, at 905-8275324 ext. 26.
